Yes, this is Leroy Cairo Selwyn. Most just know him as Leroy and those fortunate enough to be close to him call him Roy. His name, though a bit strange - full name wise and in all honesty - has meaning behind it. Instead of being named after his father, like so many other pureblood families, Leroy was named for the greatness expected of him from the first born son to the pureblood Selwyn family. Leroy itself meaning ‘King’ in French and Cairo meaning ‘Victorious’. A strong name if you ask anyone.
“Don’t try and think you know anything about me, because no one does.”
And yes, this is yet another quote from the lifetime of our dear Leroy. He’s a riddle. Many people don’t know much about the silent Selwyn, and he doesn’t tell much about his personal life. If you knew his sisters then maybe you’d learn a bit, but you wouldn’t get anything out of him. He’s secretive and mysterious. His eyes hold the mystery that is Leroy and though he may have friends, they don’t really know much about his personal life. Leroy keeps everything to himself and if you weren’t there or have someone else there, then you’ll most likely never find out. Leroy is just secretive like that. Besides, it keeps his mystery going; not that he tries to have one or anything. Just so turns out he does.
“That a challenge?”
Yes, Leroy here loves challenges. Mainly due to the fact that he finds everything almost too easy. He likes having a challenge and being challenged. Makes life a bit more interesting for him. Even if he doesn’t win, Leroy won’t be sore about it, but he’ll continue working until he’s perfect at whatever the challenge may be. Challenges only serve to fuel his motivation and entertainment; he welcomes them with open arms.
“Nothing short of perfection. As heir to the Selwyn family, nothing less is expected.”
This quote came from his dear old father. One of the reasons why Leroy works to be perfect at anything he does. His father may have been tough on his sister - he’ll get to that later - but he was a whole new tough on Leroy. The pressure of upholding the Selwyn family name and being the perfect wizard, as he name would suggest - or at least imply - was difficult. Leroy grew up with this pressure and learned to keep everything in, only letting go when no one was around or when he had a proper venting ‘toy’. Even in his last year at Hogwarts, Leroy strives for perfection in everything he does. Nothing less is expected. It’s been drilled into his head that trying to obtain perfection became like second nature to him. Even if he may never reach it, Leroy is always going to try.
“Learn where your place is and everything should go fine for even someone like you.”
Harsh, yes indeed. No one ever accused Leroy of being kind. In fact, though he does believe everyone has a ‘place’, Leroy does not follow the pureblood supremecy belief. He’s completely neutral on that topic. However, his theory of how everyone had a ‘place’ comes with the power they wield. He, himself, is a rather powerful individual. He’d already mastered non-verbal and wandless magic after hours and sleepless nights. For many weeks at a time, Leroy would work himself to exhaustion trying to perfect his wandless magic. He mastered non-verbal magic quite easily, but wandless magic was more difficult for him. After about two and a half years of practicing - and being pushed by his father once he found out how simple non-verbal magic came to him - and having to be kept at the hospital wing, or St. Mungos, for magical and physical exhaustion, Leroy finally perfected his wandless magic. So yes, he finds himself a powerful being, though he knows other powerful wizards and witches when he sees them. He will lower his pride and accept he is not the best, but he will always try to be no matter what the situation. Pride, though a usual problem in Slytherin, is no matter for Leroy. So long as he knows his own skill, he doesn’t particularly care what others think or say about him. He finds most of them far below him anyways.
“Don’t tempt me, for I am very tempted to curse you to oblivion and back then back to oblivion permanently.”
And he would do it. Leroy is a very dangerous wizard. He would rather hex, curse and hit you just to hear the sound of a bone breaking or a body hitting the hard ground. His amusement usually comes in tormenting others with his dark sense of humor. In short, Leroy isn’t all that nice of a guy. He’s a very…dark, and complex individual that should not be trifled with. His past may not seem that dark, but his personality very much is. When you see him angry, it’s just best to swallow your pride and turn away. Leroy Cairo Selwyn is not a wizard to duel, especially when angry. He has a high tolerance of many things, but when he is angered, best expect anger. He’s not the type to go into a rage, unless it was something that pushed past even his self-control.
“Push me away from love and I’ll never go back.”
And that’s exactly what his father had done. As soon as Leroy was old enough to speak without taking ‘baby talk’, gone was the caring father. In place of him was the cold, distant father that wanted nothing but the perfect son. His mother showed him love, sure, but even then, his father discouraged it. He simply stated that it would make him weak and reliable on his mother. So, Leroy was forced to become the perfect son far before he could truly feel the love of his parents. While his father pushed him in his magical abilities and proper ways of a pureblood wizard, his mother taught him how to act around ladies. So, he was raised to be a gentleman. The pride his parents occasionally showed him seemed to be the only love available to him, so he did whatever to get it. He reached out for it, but got bitten every time. His father was a difficult man to make proud. Leroy learned that from an early age. However, with his siblings, it was different. His mother spoke to him about it once, while his father was at work, that he was the big brother. And as the big brother, he had to take care of his sisters. Protect them and love them. It was yet another responsibility to place on young Leroy’s shoulders, but he found it was one he was willing to take a hold of. Leroy adored his sisters like no other; perhaps the only ones who he cared for. His mother had gotten distant in the order of their father. His father, well, Leroy suspected he never was a ‘father’ in the first place. But his sisters, they were the only ones that showed him love. The only ones he showed love to. His sisters were his baby sisters; it was fact. It didn’t change when Olivia got sorted into Hufflepuff, and it will never change. Always the protective
“Ladies, I hope you are enjoying your evening.”
As said before, Leroy is a complete gentleman. Raised to stand once a lady enters, pull out her chair for her, ask her how her day was. Buy her what she needed, or bring gifts for whatever reason. Shower women with adoration and kindness. That was what he was raised as by his mother - how to treat women correctly. Thus, his charming personality. He’s not a player, for he’s never been interested in love, well, relationship love. He’s had girlfriends, yes, and he played the perfect part of the dominant boyfriend, but he never loved a single one of them. Why? The only love he knew he had to be separated from when he was twelve years old. Still, he’s only ever a gentleman. Though, get him in the right state and he will hex you. He won’t hit a girl, never. But he will curse them to oblivion for the right reasons.
“Emotions are a sign of weakness. And as the heir to the Selwyn family, weakness is not an option!”
His father bred him to the indifferent boy he is. The one that is almost impossibly quiet, with only sarcastic remarks to mutter. The one with insults on the tip of his tongue to those he finds unworthy of anything more. His father had bred him to not show his emotions or let them take control. Anger though, was a bit of a problem. Leroy always had a bad temper. His high tolerance will save you from his wrath, as stated earlier, but once broken, an angry Leroy is not one to even be in the same corridor in. This is also the reason he doesn’t date often. Not many girls can take his ‘I-couldn’t-care-less’ attitude that he adapted as second nature. It may take a while, but behind that indifferent attitude is a pretty cool guy. It just takes a while to get to him. The only ones who have ever known of this cool, good Leroy are his sisters, as they are the only ones who he’s ever showed that side of him to.
“We each follow our own paths and we can’t fault others for doing the same.”
Wise beyond his years, Leroy does take into account what others usually don’t. When Olivia was first sorted, Leroy was shocked. Then he remembered the words of his father. Selwyns were only Slytherins. Any other house and they’re a disgrace. No longer a Selwyn by name or blood. He was disgusted with it. He hadn’t wanted Olivia to be sorted into Hufflepuff at first and was upset with her. Had she not wanted to go into Slytherin? However, later on Leroy began to wisen up and accepted Olivia as a Hufflepuff, though they rarely had to chance to communicate both inside and outside of Hogwarts. Leroy regrets it, but he can’t change the past. He once made the mistake of mentioning how it wasn’t Olivia’s fault she was in Hufflepuff and his father was absolutely livid with him. Leroy had never seen his father in such a rage, except the time when Olivia first came home after being sorted. I will not have my heir sympathizing with any blood traitors! That child is a blood traitor! You are the heir! Act like it! The lecture continued on and slowly but surely Leroy felt hate bubbling up in his chest. His father made sure to teach him a lesson he wouldn’t soon forget - as it most undoubtedly left a few scars - and Leroy never brought it up again.
“Think you can change me? That I need to be changed? Don’t delude yourself, love. I’m not the good guy. I’m not the bad guy. So just leave it be.”
He may have a dark, dangerous part to his personality, but as said before, Leroy is a very complex person. His charming ways with treating the ladies right seemed to give him the air of a good guy. Though his actions and words would say otherwise - though he barely seems to get caught. He doesn’t care for blood purity like his father. He doesn’t care for houses like his father. Leroy finds he doesn’t care about a lot of things. He just doesn’t care. But he keeps to himself. Impossibly silent and reilient, never once letting anything slip past his lips that wasn’t intentional. Don’t get me wrong, Leroy is still a Slytherin through and through. He’s a bit loveless, with the exception of his two ‘baby sisters’. Leroy cares for them more than he wants to admit, simply because it is a weakness. And once found out, could be exposed for the worst. Leroy only works to protect his siblings, even if it may not seem like it. Olivia and Juliana are the only ones that keep his heart soft and beating. Other than that, Leroy may as well be your intimidating, doesn’t-care, ‘bad boy’ of a wizard, who is so filled with hate at the world and most especially his father, because of his father, the man he once in a lifetime ago looked up to.
