The air smelled thick of rain and mud and a large cloud cover cast shadows, with the help of what very little visible rays of sunlight there was, across the Hogwarts courtyard. The rain had subsided for the time being but the angry dark of the sky threatened with more.
Set frozen in the middle was a figured clad in bright yellow rain boots and a matching rain slicker. The hood of the slicker hid the figures identity and standing at no more than 5’3, it appeared to be more of a child than a teenager.
Suddenly, the figure leaped across the courtyard, flying through the air like some sort of odd muggle superhero and landing with their whole body face first into the dark green grass. Somehow during the acrobatics, the hood of the raincoat managed to work its way off said figures head revealing a mass of violent red wavy hair. The mass of hair cascaded down the girl’s back, at an abnormally long length, covering much of her body from aerial view. If the red hair weren’t a dead giveaway of the identity of the figure, upon further approach the intense smell of Christmas tree’s would have been.
As soon as classes had released, a moment in the day Daphne Macmillan had long anticipated, she had made her way out onto the courtyard for possibly one of her favorite rainy day activities; catching toads. It was unknown why she had decided to participate in such an activity in the first place, and she herself could not explain the joy in such an endeavor, but still, when large rainstorms struck Hogwarts she was sure to be participating.
Rolling around on her back she giggled with pride at the large catch squirming around in her hands. It was a meaty one, with a large round stomach and equally large round yellow eyes. Its midsection was larger than Daphne’s head making it a tad difficult for her to hoist the frog over face for a full view.
Eventually, she managed to roll herself around onto her bum by transitioning her hands grasp of the toad from around its middle section to clinging onto just one of its legs. Rocking back and forth to gain momentum, she stood up. The toad, dazed and confused at this point lay limp upside down just blinking at her.
“You silly little thing,” she said, and repositioned her hands to around the amphibians large belly.“Now, now, don’t be frightened.”
She moved the toads face closer to her own, so their eyes were parallel and his mouth was only inches from her nose.
“I only wish to catch you, " she cooed to the creature. "And, once caught, I promise to always release you. Please extend word of my kindness to your kin, but make sure they do not change the level of difficulty in regards to catching. That would not make for any fun.”
Daphne cradled the toad in her arms one last time before she plopped him onto the grass and allowed him to hop away. Taking the opportunity, the toad was gone in seconds, making large leaps and bounds across the grassy quad.
Quite proud with her first catch of the day, Daphne resumed her scarecrow position, her one blue and one green eye patiently watching for any leaping toads. One could only imagine the hilarity that was her actions at this moment in time should someone stumble onto the freethinking, slightly abnormal little Hufflepuff.

It was once again another rainy day in Scotland, something that was hardly surprising. The whole bloody island (even if it was a bloody big one) was nothing more then a landmass that practically attracted the rain like some sort of magnet. And yet there were always more then a few people that he found on such rain filled days that actually looked surprised when the heavens opened up and dropped drop after drop of rain upon their heads. Honestly the reaction that people had was completely foolish at best, anyone who knew anything about the area had to have some sort of an idea that there was no shortage of water to be found. However, what he himself found more surprising, if there was a word for such a thing considering it would have to come to pass anyway, was that the rain had decided to stop on its own accord. Not that the Gryffindor was going to be complaining anytime soon even if it did rain often he was not a bloody duck and did like to have dry weather from time to time. Honestly the change in the weather really was enough to lighten his mood some even if it was all going to be short lived. More then anything it was hoped that the weather was short lived instead of his current mood.
Kaiden stuffed his hands in the pockets of his robes and decided with much cheerfulness that the idea of taking a walk through the courtyard sounded nice. And with the weather being the way it was odds were he would have some peace and quiet. Which, with great sadness, was found to not be the case as he came into the courtyard and came to see one of the more odder sights of Hogwarts. And that really was saying something considering the castle was filled with more magic then the muggle population even thought possible. There before him was a Hufflepuff and fellow year mate. One that he did not know all that well but quite frankly he did not consider her to be all that worth knowing on a personal level. While she did come from a pure-blood family, who really were great for keeping around for the whole idea of social climbing, she was not even worth dealing with in that respect. Not that she wasn't nice to look at but there were many oddities that she had that made the whole thing not worth anything.
"You do know that it isn't very sane speaking to random toads let alone catching them." The Gryffindor commented watching the whole thing before him. Not that he had all that much room to talk considering he did talk to his owl Rinny all the time but there was something different when it was your own pet and not some random creature that was just picked up. At least that was the story that he was going to be sticking to as he continued to watch the Hufflepuff. "What are you doing anyway?" He asked, puzzled not understanding why someone would willing catch a toad for no reason at all. But what made even less sense was the fact that magic would totally make the whole process that much easier. Being a pure-blood surely she knew that so the thing was either she was having some sort of fun out of catching the things or the assignment was that toads had to be caught without magic. "Is there some sort of care of magical creatures assignment that I don't know about?" He asked. A part of him was more then slightly hoping that, that was the case. Other wise, that witch really was crackers. WORDS;; 619 OUTFIT;; Gryffindor robes TAGGED;; Daphne NOTES;; I'm sorry you have to deal with Kaiden xD And I will make the next one better. While many were drawn to her quirky personality others found it terribly annoying. Not the brightest crayon in the box, her personality led to alienation by some of the Hogwarts population, mostly those who didn’t understand her or were just too blatantly annoyed by her to try. She was far from average and three steps past normal; a girl who preferred to spend her time talking about dragons or even pretending to be one.
The most comical part about the whole situation being that little Daphne was completely oblivious to her abnormality. In her little cotton candy mind, everyone enjoyed some sort of random pointless activity from time to time. For some such an activity was jogging, which she found the thought of to be awfully dreadful –running around in circles over and over again pointlessly, really?- for her it was catching toads without magic.
Daphne remained completely still as her fellow student approached her, not wanting to scare off any toads that could be lurking in the tall grass. She did not recognize him at first and when she finally did, she was oddly disappointed. Never one to protest about company, especially with such fantastic weather conditions for such an activity, it was unusual for her to be less than thrilled about the arrival of another person.
Daphne knew little about….- Kailyn? Wait, his name’s Kaitlyn, no why would he have a girls name…maybe his parents weren’t very excited about his birth…that would explain his grumpy attitude… or was it Kadlyn, yes definitely Kadlyn.. no.. wait.. maybe it was..Karl?- the Gryffindor.
What she did know, at least the opinion she had formed was that he was a grumpy little character. Daphne spent her time in their mutual classes avoiding him over getting to know him. She found him to be extremely ‘frowny’ and should her memory serve her right, on more than one occasion she had offered to give him a hug, which she could not for the life of her remember if he accepted or denied.
“Sanity is a very personal thing,” Daphne said, speaking from just one corner of her mouth, not wanting to disturb any of the toads. Her eyes remained frozen on the grass. “Besides, if you ask me, nothing ever worth accomplishing was sane. To be sane is to be awfully boring, don’t you agree?”
Before she could answer his next question, Daphne saw the hop of a middle-sized toad to her left. Not willing to let the glorious moment slip through her fingers, she leaped through the air for a second time and landed right on top of the little bugger. Twisting around like some odd inflatable man, she grabbed the toad around its mid section. It didn’t squirm much and with a few soft coo’s it was calm.
With her tiny hands still wrapped around the toad, she giggled slightly at his next question, but covered her mouth quickly to trap any further giggles from escaping past her lips. She did not want to seem rude; perhaps it was his first time witnessing someone catching toads. Poor thing.. He really did need to get out more.
“I am catching toads,” she laughed. “There is no assignment. Not everything one does must be assigned to them first. It is quite fun, really! Would you like to give it a try?”
She held out the toad up in front of his face and the creature responded with a deep, annoyed croak. Moving it from side to side as if it were speaking to him, like some type of puppet, she deepened her voice and gave her best toad impression, “Please catch me! Ribbet! Ribbet!”

It had never really came to mind that there was or ever a person that actually liked to capture toads for nothing less then sport. The whole thing was hard for the fifth year to even remotely understand why anyone would even want to do such a thing. A toad was just that a toad. It was not as if the creatures served some sort of magical or ingredient purpose as things went. While they were far larger then any of the ones that most muggles had ever seen they were still far from creatures that Kaiden found any sort of interest in. In fact, there was nothing interesting about them at all and above everything else they were downright dirty creatures considering they had been hopping around on the wet ground picking up any amount of dirt and things of that nature. And it went without saying that the Gryffindor was far from the type to have anything to do with activities like that, he was far more interested in remaining clean. There was just something about being dirty that very much so went against the way that he felt about having proper attire and neat attire for that matter.
Kaiden rose a brow at the Hufflepuff before him. Still not believing what he was altogether seeing considering she was hunting toads for no reason at all. Even if she had her own views on sanity, she still without a doubt took the cake in such a thing. "I find comfort in sanity, thank you very much." He replied, pursed his lips. And that was very much so the truth in Kaiden's mind and ideas. Perhaps that was considered boring by some but he was very much so happy with that part of himself and there was no chance that he was going to be changing for anyone let alone some random Hufflepuff. Pureblooded or not there was nothing to be gained from her and that was just the way it was. Though she was not actually hard on the eyes and that was something and perhaps the only thing that she was good for. His eyes at least got something from her but that was where it ended. She was quite empty headed wasn't she? Indeed, she never did seem to be the type that was capable of more then a few thoughts per day or the odds were that her brain was going to overheat and melt from the stress of use. At least that was what he was going to keep thinking of her as.
It was next to impossible to keep himself from rolling his eyes at the witch as she held the toad up to him and began to croak like the creatures themselves. Indeed, she was no where near sane that was for sure. She was even more crackers for the idea of thinking that he was going to join in on what she considered fun. Regardless he could not understand how the whole idea was fun. Wrestling around on the ground trying to catch the beasts. Honestly the whole thing was more degrading then fun and something that he was far from surprised that his year mate was found doing. She was always an odd bird. Far from someone that he considered worth knowing and barely worth the few words that he was tossing her way now. Luckily at the moment she seemed to be having no trouble following what he was saying but he was trying to keep things simple for her. Yes, he was quite mean when it came to her lack of intelligence the way that he viewed it anyway. But then again it was never said that Kaiden Lane was a nice guy to be around.
"No," The Gryffindor retorted grumpily. "I don't see the entertainment in rolling around on the ground like some sort of dog." It was degrading. "How is that fun, though? You have a wand. Use it." Really, behavior he'd expect it out of a muggleborn, they did tend to forget they could do magic. But at the very least if she was going to catch them the hard way, she could have at least made it more interesting for his eyes or something.
