The moment of the week Mary had been dreading - the time to write home. She had been putting it off since her mother's letter had come (a letter that had been far too long, given that school had just recently started). A letter that demanded to know every tiny detail of her days at school. Honestly, what did her mother want? A detailed explanation of how she brushed her teeth? Mary sighed as she made her way towards the owlery, still in her uniform and carrying her bag with her - she had decided to do it right after classes were done, and stop putting it off (thankfully, her mother didn't have any owls at home, or else she would have already been showered with letters asking her why she hadn't replied). On her hand, she carried a neatly folded piece of parchment, with a not that would definitely be deemed too short for her mother's liking.
"Hey mom, I'm fine. School's fine, the same as ever. Lily is doing great too. I love you. Take care. And send my love to dad too. It's no use trying to owl him, you know how he gets.
Love, Mary"
Yes, she could almost imagine her mother's look once she read the note, but really, what else could she say? Gone were the days when everything was new and every letter she sent was huge, letting her mother know of all the tiny details... how a staircase had moved while she was trying to get somewhere, how it had been to learn new spells... but now those things had become routine, and she felt no need to talk about them. She understood perfectly well how her mother felt, but there was nothing she could do about it. The last bit had been something she had started to add to her letters on her fourth year, after receiving a letter from her father demanding she didn't 'send anymore of those filthy animals' to his home. And so she had. Her parents talked on occasion, so it was best to have her mother updating him on her progress. Not that he cared much about it anyway.
Deep down, it bothered her that of all people, her father couldn't accept her for what she was. Well, it hadn't been exactly normal to have a letter being delivered to you telling you you're a witch, but her parents were supposed to support her, not telling her it was all nonsense, like her father had. And that had pretty much ruined their relationship and their family. Well, sort of, as both her and her mother were quite happy they way they were now. She wished her relationship with her father could be fixed, but there was no use troubling herself with it.
Mary made her way up the stairs, happy to find the place deserted. Immediately, an Eagle Owl dropped from one of the higher perches and landed on the female's shoulder. Mary petted the animal as she walked towards one of the windows. "Hey Tails. How have you been?" she asked absentmindedly as she handed him the letter. "Take this to Mom will you?" The Owl took off, releasing it's grip on the female's shoulder. She leaned against the wall, watching as the bird disappeared into the sky.

molly's week had been packed and busy. she had scrambled to finish all of her assignments and hated herself for putting off some of the assignments until such last minute. it was so unlike her, but she had been so swamped with homework lately she didn't know where it began and where it finished. last night had finally finished everything and had time to write to her mother and father who were probably wondering where the letter from molly was, as she was late on sending them one. and she was sure that her brothers probably hadn't been sending her parents letters, not at the frequency that they would have liked, or what molly would have assumed would only be acceptable. so while others were finishing homework, or lounging in the common room, molly found herself with a quill and parchment, writing a letter to her dear parents. she was able to take her time and think about what she wanted to say and not make it a rushed letter, like she was sure her parents would be getting come finals time. or the letters she was sure her dim-witted twin brothers sent them. the truth was, she missed her parents, and she missed seeing them, so sending letters to them were a big deal to molly, and she enjoyed writing and receiving them. her letter read accordingly: dearest mum and dad,
sorry this letter is coming a lot later than expected. i've been swamped with school work this week and finally just had the opportunity last night to sit down and write. things are going well here. apart from the crazy amounts of school work demanded on a seventh year, everything here is great. i'm studying, but also getting out and watching the quiddich games. i'm also knitting lots in my spare time. i think i'll have scarves and mittens made for everyone soon, including nana.
gideon and fabian are doing well too, as i'm assuming they haven't wrote to you lately. they are just as annoying as ever. i'm making sure they too are staying on top of their school work so no need to worry about that.
how is everything going at home? any exciting news? everything around here seems to be pretty steady and uneventful. well, take care, and i miss you like always.
love, molly she knew she wouldn't have time to send off the owl late last night, so she decided she would go to the owlery today to send the letter off. she finished class and headed over there, eager to send her parents good thoughts and hoping that they weren't getting too anxious without hearing from one of their children lately. molly knew they wouldn't be. they were two normal parents who loved and looked over for their children, and cared about hearing about their well being from time to time. so letter in hand, uniform still on, she headed for the owlery. she hoped her owl, fern would be on her best behavior today. she was a loyal owl, but had a habit of nipping at fingers if feeling deprived. as she neared the owlery she saw a familiar figure in the building. she quickened her pace as her friend came into view. mary grace macdonald was one of molly's best friends, and had been since they were only twelve and thirteen and had met in the quiddich stands. now they had been through so much together, and molly almost knew just by the way she carried herself when something was wrong. today looked to be one of those days, or at least molly had caught mary in a bad moment. "hey mare," she spoke trying not to scare mary as she stared up after her owl. "everything alright? and don't lie to me, i can tell by the way you're standing. so come on, spill." molly walked over to mare, letter still in hand. her letter had waited this long, it could wait until few minutes. her friend seemed to need her, and mary came first.

Mary, being the reasonably lazy person she was, was systematically putting things off, believing she could do them later, only to end up turning to her friends in the last moments so she could survive. She knew, of course, this wasn't a good approach, but it was the way she worked, and she did just fine with it, thank you very much.
Take the situation at hand, for example. The reasonable course of action would have been sending the letter and return to the common room - that potions essay wasn't gonna write itself, as much as the female would have liked that - but the female had choose to linger on, and just stare off into the distance. How very unlikely of her. However, it seemed that after the incident last year ("incident", she liked to refer to it by that, perhaps hoping to minimize the damage done), this had become more of a normal behavior in Mary.
She hadn't told her mother about it. Nor had she told her about the current situation going on within the wizarding world. In all honesty, she couldn't think of a proper way to tell her any of those things. And she didn't want her to worry. There was no need to tell her about a war, no. And she most definitely wouldn't need to know that muggleborns were primary targets. So, Mary would not say a word about it until it was extremely necessary. Who knew, maybe it would all work out? And in the meantime, Mary had Hogwarts. And Hogwarts was safe. 'Yeah, so safe people almost get thrown of off towers' she thought bitterly. But it was true. As safe as the castle might be against forces from the outside, those within it's walls were already dangerous enough.
The sound of steps broke her line of thought (thankfully) and Mary turned in order to see who it had been to enter the owlery, glad to see a familiar face. Molly was one of the best friends she could have made at Hogwarts. In fact, she considered the other female as a part of her family already. But Molly's knack for knowing when something was off with Mare both amazed and unsettled the other girl. She offered Molly a small smile, which faltered at the other girl's questioning. By Merlin, how did she do that? "You know, I'm beginning to worry you might be a Legilemens, you know" she commented with a grin. "But everything's fine, don't worry. I was just thinking... you know... about... everything."
How even more unlikely it was to find Mary Macdonald at a loss of what to say.

A K I N D O F C O M F O R T I N Y O U C O M E S W H E N Y O U L I E R I G H T B A C K ( safe from such a strange point of view )
molly knew mary almost as well as she knew her own family. she had been there for mare during some pretty rough times and had taken on more of a role of big sister. and that role of big sister was one she took on well, being one to two brothers. she knew she could be protective and overly so at times, but she knew that her friends appreciated how much she cared. she almost couldn't help it, she just had this quality about her that nurtured others. it wasn't like she was an overprotective mother or anything... well, she had some friends who would argue against that. but molly didn't care. her heart was so big and she worried, so she was always going to try and help others.
"you know, i'm beginning to worry you might be a legilemens, you know." molly couldn't help but laugh. "just because i know you well doesn't mean i can read your mind. i just care," molly responded walking over to mare. she knew that mary had been through a lot and when she responded that she was fine, but that she was just thinking about everything, molly knew that there was probably a lot more to it. but instead of pressing further, molly decided she'd break away from pushing at her friend and just nodded simply. holding up her letter she spoke, "i'm finally sending a letter to my parents. they're probably freaking out because they haven't heard from me in two weeks. and we all know that hearing from me means hearing from gideon and fabian. those two boys write once every three months if my parents are lucky."
molly walked over to the other side of the owlery to her owl stan. he was a grey owl with tinges of black within his feathers and was fairly young. the family had gotten him two years ago when their other owl had passed away. stan was a reliable owl and particularly liked molly and other females. she attached the letter to the owl and sent him on his way, hoping that her parents would get back to her soon. she turned back to mare, wondering who she was sending an owl to. she knew that she was on pretty rough terms with her father and that her being a wizard had shocked and torn her family apart. but family was still family and molly didn't understand why people turned their back on their own blood. these were the people who should mean the most to you, and for molly that was for sure the case. but it must be hard for muggleborn children to understand the wizarding realm and discover on your eleventh birthday that you have magical abilities. molly never had to deal with that. her family was pureblood after all. and of course molly didn't understand a lot of things about the muggle world, but it still must have been hard.
she walked back to where mare was standing, smiled to the girl and took her hands and rubbed mare's arms slightly. "are you sure you're okay? if not, you know i'm here for you."
