glaciers melting in the - - - * * DEAD OF NIGHT[/sup] “What a stupid suggestion. That would never work.” Bellatrix Black snapped coldly at the girl sitting next to her. It was not in her nature to be polite, and it seemed the girl she had just spoken to was well aware of that fact, as she simply rolled her eyes and carried on eating. She glanced around at the Great Hall, pleased to see it was slowly filling up as it approached lunchtime. The more people there were in the Great Hall, the less attention they would attract. After all, they weren’t exactly the most conspicuous bunch, a group of about ten or so older Slytherins gathered around a small section of the table. There were several sheets of parchment spread out in front of the group, but nobody was paying them any attention, everybody’s eyes were on Bellatrix, as she once again outlined what they had been planning for the last half hour. A trivial matter to most, but this group of Slytherins took their inter-house rivalry very seriously. Especially when it came to Gryffindor.
“Heads up Black,” the boy on her right muttered, “McGonagall’s on her way over.” Bellarix lifted her head, he was telling the truth, the Gryffindor Head of House was walking directly towards them. With an almost undetectable flick of her wand, the parchment lying on the table was gone. And just in time. “Good afternoon, Professor,” Bellatrix started in a sickly sweet voice, with a hint of a smirk on her lips. The transfiguration Professor pursed her lips in annoyance, but there was no evidence that the group of Slytherins were doing anything they shouldn’t be, evidence which she had clearly hoped she would find. Instead, the older woman turned around and headed back towards the staff table. A few smirks appeared around the table. The dislike for the Gryffindor Head of House was particulary strong amongst the elder Slytherins.
Bella turned back to the students gathered around her. “We’ll continue this later.” she said decisiviely. The dismissive tone in her voice was obvious, and without being told to, the group stood and walked out of the great Hall. All except for the sixth year sitting next to her. “That means you as well. Go.” Reluctantly, he as well followed the rest of the group out of the Great Hall. Those at neigbouring tables stared in amazement, but the rest of the Slytheins were completely used to her behaviour. The general rule was that if Bellatrix Black wanted you to leave, you left.

Anyone else would have considered it rather late. Narcissa considered herself on time. After all, she was a Black. She was never late, everyone else was merely early. It was as if the world revolved around the Black family. And in some ways, it did. Being from ‘The Most Ancient and Noble’ families really had it’s perks. Especially with some of the connections her parents and aunts and uncles had. Narcissa loved the advantage she had as a Black over many others. Having things go her way most the time was just one of those times.
She was walking - perhaps gliding would be the better term - towards the Great Hall, as if she had all the time in the world. Really, she did. After lunch she had divination - the silly excuse for a class - but she was fine with arriving late. After all, just one look and she would be off the hook. As she headed towards the Great Hall for lunch, Cissa encountered some people on their way out. Most of them avoided her, changing their own paths so they wouldn’t cross. She couldn’t help but smirk a bit at that. Even if she wasn’t a sixth or seventh year, she still held power. Mainly due to her name and siblings, but sooner or later, she would show people she herself was not to mess with either.
"Good afternoon professor." she greeted with a falsely sweet smile towards the Charms professor as he left the Great Hall. She noted Professor McGonagall at the Slytherin table, talking to Bellatrix for a short moment before pursing her lips and walking away. Narcissa smirked proudly. No matter who she was talking to, Bellatrix always seemed to come out on top. Sure, she was the younger sister, but the swell of pride she had for having Bella make McGonagall of all professors turn away, well, it was enough to give the entire Slytherin house pride. And she was sure it did. Heading her way towards her eldest sister, she noted how the others seemed to get up and leave. Cissa couldn’t help but giggle lightly as Bella dismissed the boy next to her, who clearly wanted some of her attention. Of course, she figured Bella wouldn’t notice unless he was blunt with it, especially since Narcissa knew Bella had a crush on a certain Slytherin.
Not surprising, she found them to be a rather…powerful couple. They suited each other well. As the boy sulkily passed, Narcissa couldn’t help but laugh lightly, causing him to turn away, a slight blush on his cheeks. "He was hoping for some alone time you know?" her soft, light voice teased as she sat in the previously occupied seat. She was Narcissa Black. She could get away with many things. Including around her sisters, but mainly Bella. "How have you been Bella?" she asked, placing some of the lighter foods on her plate. It wasn’t particularly full, but she wasn’t all that hungry anyways. Pouring herself some sweetened tea instead of the common pumpkin juice, Cissa turned back towards her eldest sister, head slightly tilted in inquiry.

glaciers melting in the - - - * * DEAD OF NIGHT[/sup] Bella was quite content with her decision to send the others away for the present. Approximately thirty seconds later, however, she was beginning to regret it. Now there was no one around her to converse with. Of course, Bellatrix enjoyed solitude as much as the next Slytherin, but sitting alone at the Slytherin table at lunch with chattering voices all around her was pushing it.
Staring aimlessly around the hall, her eyes moved from group to group, table to table. The staff table held no interest to her, and there was always the fact that Professor McGonagall was sitting up there. The less she had to do with that woman, the better. The Hufflepuff table didn’t catch her attention either, it seemed occupy a large number of younger students, all hyper and over-excited from the pumpkin juice. And the Gryffindor table, well, it wasn’t even worth a fleeting look.
Sighing, Bella turned her attention back towards the door of the Great Hall, her expression lightening slightly as she spotted Narcissa walking towards her. The way her youngest sister walked was elegant and graceful, with her long blond hair fanning out behind her. It was hardly surprising she drew many appreciative looks from the males in the immediate vicinity. There had been a point in Bella’s life when she had been envious of her sister’s good looks, but the moment had passed and both Bella and Andromeda had come to accept their younger sister’s beauty.
She raised an eyebrow at Narcissa’s words. Not even for a split second had it occurred for her that the sixth year had wanted to stay for any reason other than to finish his lunch. Perhaps it was something she could look into later? The thought brought a smirk to her lips almost immediately. She knew for a fact she could never go through with it, not while a certain seventh year was still wandering around.
“I hadn’t even noticed,” she replied honestly, the smirk still present on her lips. She noticed the lack of substantial food Narcissa placed onto her plate and she frowned in disapproval, but made no comment. A pointed look should be enough to get the message across. “I’ve been . . . okay. The work load in seventh year is taking up a lot of my time.” It wasn’t the exact truth. Bella had always rushed through her school work, not caring about the quality, nothing had changed this year. Thoughts of a particular Slytherin actually caused her a lot of distractions lately. But there was no need to give away everything at once. “I hope you’ve enjoyed the term so far? It seems a while since we last spoke.” And with that she mimicked her sister’s actions and poured herself some pumpkin juice.

Narcissa noted the look of disapproval that Bellatrix had given her. It wasn’t as if she was starving herself, but she didn’t particularly like the heavier foods. Perhaps it was due to her rather spoiled childhood, she was a bit pickier with her foods than Bella or Meda were. However, though she wasn’t all that hungry, she piled her plate a bit more, in order to appease her sister. Perhaps she’d take a walk around the courtyard and Black Lake. Still, Cissa couldn’t help but look for her eldest sister’s approval. It was very influencing, having Bellatrix’s approval. Though being her sister was as well. Taking a sip from her tea, Narcissa glanced towards Bella, then her bright blue eyes turned towards the exit, where Bellatrix’s previous company had just left.
She wasn’t all that surprised when Bellatrix hadn’t noticed how the sixth year practically drooled over her. Of course she wouldn’t. Bella had her eye on a rather more…deserving Slytherin, if she did say so herself. It wasn’t as if the sixth year was ugly, but Cissa didn’t like him with her eldest sister. Even with her sister’s relationships, Narcissa found herself rather picky about who she approved of and who she didn’t. Sure, a small relationship would be alright, as long as it didn’t amount to anything. But Rodolphus was a good match for her rather strong and powerful sister. They matched in strength and skill, as well as pure blood. She knew how much they seemed to walk around each other, which she found a bit odd, considering their rather…dominant and powerful personalities. She supposed Bellatrix was waiting for Rod to admit it first, while Rod was waiting for Bella.
Nonetheless, she couldn’t help but giggle at her eldest sister. Some of the other houses looked at her as if she were crazy, giggling at Bellatrix Black like that. "Hadn’t noticed? He looked as if his puppy had run off when you dismissed him." And that was true. When he turned away from her blushing, it was from complete embarrassment at being caught practically panting after someone as unattainable as Bellatrix. The smirk present on Bella’s face only made Cissa giggle more. She knew Bella, and the sixth year’s silly little crush would amount to nothing at all. Even if Bella decided to give him the time of day. "Though I’m not entirely surprised." she laughed lightly, almost like the sound of tinkling bells, instead of the horrible high pitched squealing of some of the girls.
"I’m sure you’ll get through it, you always do." Even though she figured Bella had other things on her mind rather than the workload of seventh year. The way Bella and Rod seemed to interact just seemed to scream ‘tension’. Of course, if she were as head over heels for someone like Bellatrix was with Rod, Narcissa figured she’d be the same way. So, really, she couldn’t blame her sister. "It’s nothing new I suppose. A bit more difficult but only because OWLs coming up, so we’ve been working on that." Of course, fifth year was like the ‘dreaded’ year, where you spent all year preparing for your OWLs. Though Bellatrix had the NEWTs to think about, so she really couldn’t complain. Besides, OWLs were near the end of the year anyways; she still had plenty of time. Taking a bite from the food on her plate, Narcissa allowed a moment of silence to pass between the two sisters.
"Both of you keep playing games with each other. You know that?"

glaciers melting in the - - - * * DEAD OF NIGHT[/sup] Bella’s expression changed as she watched Narcissa add food onto her plate. It wasn’t a smile, Bellatrix Black rarely smiled, but her expression did become more satisfied. Mainly because Narcissa was her little sister, and Bellatrix had taken it upon herself to look out for her while they were still both at Hogwarts together. After all, this year was the final year they would be in school together. Next year, Bellatrix wouldn’t be around to threaten every guy that took a fancy to her younger sister. Or make sure she was eating properly, no matter how much she insisted she wasn’t that hungry. And although there were three Black sisters, Bella didn’t trust Andromeda to play the role of older sister very well at all.
But a small part of her was satisfied by how easy that had been. She hadn’t uttered a single word, yet she had Cissa doing exactly what she wanted. It was an incredibly addictive feeling, having people do exactly as you tell them. And in Slytherin house, where there was a daily power struggle to see who came out on top, the feeling was even more intense when you won. And Bella often did. After all, there wasn’t a single Slytherin who didn’t know who she was, or exactly what she was capable of.
And the same courtesy was extended to Cissa. She had no doubt that when she left Hogwarts, Narcissa would be the one to take her place. After all, who else was better fitted for the job? Her smirk only intensified at the sound of her sister’s laugh. Her obliviousness to the situation was amusing, as was the situation itself. The sixth year in question was rather good looking, very polite, and from a respectable family, but he still held nothing of interest to Bella. Besides, Bella had set herself very high standards, standards which only a very few select Slytherins could achieve.
She nodded at her sister’s comment, remembering perfectly clearly the sudden increase in workload in fifth year. Every year group seemed as surprised as the one before them. But the disharmony seemed to only last a few weeks, by that time the fifth years had settled into a steady routine. And Bella was certain her sister would do the same. She froze for a split second at her sister’s comment. It was not a topic of conversation she had expected. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she answered casually, “We barely spend enough time with each other to be civil, never mind playing gam . . . ." She stopped abruptly, eyes fixed on the table. Damn. Narcissa had never actually mentioned Rodolphus’ name, and yet Bella had automatically assumed it was him they were talking about. And so her attempt to deny anything fell completely flat. She had completely walked into her sister’s trap. Her eyes moved back to Cissa, wondering whether that was intentional or not. Either way it was extremely clever. It meant she could no longer deny anything. The damage was already done.

She noted the slight pause in Bella’s actions as she spoke. Obviously, her sister hadn’t expected the conversation to turn towards this topic. Narcissa couldn’t help but smile when Bellatrix denied playing games. Really, it was probably one of the only things that Narcissa knew Bella would deny. She was a proud individual, there was very few things that Bellatrix would deny. Apparently her relationship with Rodolphus was one of them. The youngest Black just raised an eyebrow, her expression portraying her disbelief at Bella’s statement. Of course, it was rather amusing. Just hearing those words come from Bellatrix’s mouth seemed so out of character that Narcissa couldn’t help but be amused. Really. There was also the fact that It seemed as if Bellatrix was going to let something slip. Probably because of the fact that the unspoken topic was a certain seventh year Slytherin. Her good mood increased though, as she heard Bellatrix’s next words.
She tried not to laugh, really, she did. However, she couldn’t help it. It wasn’t so often that Bellatrix was caught off guard or anything of that sort. To know it was all because of a simple question and a certain Slytherin made Narcissa want to laugh. So she did. Many of the others looked at her as if she were crazy, laughing at Bellatrix Black like she was. It wasn’t often that she gained the upper hand on Bella, and Cissa couldn’t help but feel proud at the feat. Not many could either way, but being one of the few that actually managed to…well, it was something to be proud of. Her eyes twinkled mischievously, as she calmed herself down. It wouldn’t do well to get Bella angry if she wanted to get anywhere in figuring out where her relationship lie with Rod. Of course, Bella never actually mentioned his name, but Narcissa knew who she was talking about.
"I don’t think I ever mentioned anyone’s name…" she giggled once more. Her eyes still holding that twinkle in them. Her blue eyes searched the Slytherin table, but the person at topic was not present. There was a slight stab of disappointment, as it was probably going to be a bit more difficult now, especially that she didn’t have anything to go by except Bella’s words. She had hoped she’d catch Bella looking towards Rod at some point or another during their conversation, but it wasn’t the case anymore. Though, she figured she could just go to Rod and have the same conversation. Both sides would probably need a push if she wanted a relationship to happen between them. At least, a real relationship that she had hoped would happen.
"So you automatically think of a certain someone when this sort of topic comes up, huh, Bella…interesting." Narcissa smirked behind her hand, stifling her laughter. Really, she didn’t mean to, but she couldn’t help it. Had it been anyone else she was trying to match together, she probably wouldn’t have. The fact that it was her older sister, her tough and powerful older sister, made it seem a bit more amusing. "But, back to the topic at hand. You do. Don’t try to deny it, sister." she wiggled her finger at her eldest sister a bit. Again with the looks of astonishment. One would think Bella was going to curse her or something with the looks they gave the duo, mainly Cissa. She glared slightly at the closest people, causing them to turn away, and smiled once more at Bellatrix. "Admitting it is the first step."

glaciers melting in the - - - * * DEAD OF NIGHT[/sup] Bellatrix didn’t miss the looks the two of them were getting from the surrounding Slytherins. Well, the majority of looks were directed towards Cissa, astonishment clearly written all over their faces. She frowned; it wasn’t exactly characteristic of the members of Slytherin house to display emotion so obviously. But when she actually turned her attention to the students in question she was surprised to discover it wasn’t just Slytherins, it seemed her younger sister was attracting quite a lot of attention from other houses as well. Was it really such an unusual thing to see someone laughing at Bellatrix Black? In hindsight, perhaps it was. But this was her own sister, surely that made a difference? As if people expected her to suddenly curse her own sister! It appeared that Hogwarts opinion of Bellatrix Black was more sinister than it first appeared.
She joined her sister in glaring at the people around her, a poor attempt at stalling the conversation for a few seconds. It didn’t work, people barely held eye contact with her for two seconds before looking away. And then she was left having to reluctantly participate in this conversation. She stalled for a few further seconds, pushing her luck slightly as she took a drink from her glass. Eventually though, she would have to give sister some sort of answer. What that answer would be, however, was a complete mystery to her at the moment.
Her thoughts on Rodolphus were clear in her head; it was not that which caused a problem. It was admitting them that was proving to be difficult. Once she uttered the words, that was it, there was no going back, and that thought was making her feel extremely vulnerable.
If there was nothing she hated more, then it was giving people the ammunition to potentially hurt her. If she kept secrets to herself, then nobody would be able to use them against her. Yes of course Narcissa was a different matter, they were sisters, but it was other people who caused concern. She could quite easily imagine people laughing at her for wanting someone she couldn’t get. After all, this was Bella Black, she wasn’t used to not getting her own way.
“I don’t know Cissa,” she replied, “You know what he’s like, he can have any girl he wants, and he does.” She finished bitterly. “He’s not worth it.” She shrugged her shoulders, in the pretence of not caring too much. But her eyes were widened as she looked at her younger sister, hoping desperately she would see the true feelings behind her words of indifference. Admitting everything out loud was something she still wasn’t comfortable with, but then lying to her sister was certainly not an option.

Narcissa’s eyes softened with an almost motherly look at her eldest sister. She had always been the more open about caring for her sisters and of the well being of her family. It was no secret Cissa loved her family. She knew Bella very well, and having her sister act so…hesitant was a bit disconcerting. Really, it was. She was so used to having Bellatrix parade around like the queen she is. It was strange to see Bellatrix acing so unsure. Narcissa knew - ever since they were young - that Bellatrix was always meant to be powerful. She knew that she never liked it when Bellatrix was so unsure and hesitant. When her sister was afraid. Of what? Rejection? Narcissa supposed that was a fair fear, however, it wasn’t in this case. It was obvious to Cissa that Rod had felt the same way as Bellatrix, but neither ever said anything. She could see where Bella was coming from, especially with the way Rodolphus was always just going around, flirting with any female he chose.
Times like these she wished Bellatrix could be a bit more…open. Of course, Narcissa knew that Bella did like Rodolphus, otherwise they really wouldn’t be having this conversation. However, it was the fact that Bella didn’t do anything about it that bothered her. Narcissa was sure she would have at least given him a hint if she were Bellatrix. Perhaps all her sister needed was a push…and Cissa figured she’d give good ol’ Rodolphus a push too. Both were too stubborn to do anything without one, so…
If she grinned, she would have. Narcissa had a plan concocting in that pretty little head of hers. "Yeah. Then again, he is a wizard, Bella. Merlin knows you have to curse them and admit your feelings before they actually realize it." a light smile toyed with her lips. Really, boys were oblivious. One would think everyone knew of the two’s affection for each other. But no, Rodolphus just had to go around being his usual self and Bella really wasn’t all that much better. She hadn’t even admitted it yet, though Cissa was pretty sure this could count as an admittance. Blue eyes glanced around, turning ice cold at any gaze they met. She knew there were more than enough gossips in this school that every conversation could be eavesdropped on.
"If he isn’t then why don’t you go find that admirer of yours?" Cissa asked, an elegant eyebrow raised in question. Whether or not Bella did really wouldn’t affect her plans. Though, if Bella did get together with the sixth year that was vying for her attention, then Cissa could move onto Rodolphus and see what he thought of it. Whether or not he was jealous would then lead to the second step in a relationship. Though, she needed to prove Rodolphus actually was infatuated with her eldest sister. Of course, without jealousy, that would be far more complicated than needed. "Well, if you really want him to notice you just give him some hints here and there…he’s bound to notice one of them…and make sure it shows your actually interested in a relationship." Cissa smiled a bit wider, showing off her white teeth. "Not that he isn’t already interested in you."
