L E T S T Y P E W O R D S C A U S E T H E Y A M O U N T T O N O T H I N G ` pretend you can't take what you've found
it was earlier than olivia normally got up. she was woken up by nightmares and dreams of the past, and she didn't want to shut her eyes once more and immerse herself back into sleep. so instead, she had voted to go out for a morning run. she didn't care that the sun was coming up, and that the rest of the school was probably still tucked deeply in their warm and cozy beds. her bed wasn't warm or inviting to her at that moment, so she threw herself out of bed and into the nearest stretching clothing she would be able to run in. throwing on clothing in the dusty morning light, she grabbed a pair of sneakers and hair tie, walking out of the dorm and towards the school field.
when she arrived at the field, she briskly stretched out her tightened muscles. any runner could tell you not stretching before a run had severe problems the day after, especially in the morning air that felt cool to her skin. but she didn't care. her legs were bare, but they welcomed the cool breeze as it passed by her. she gazed around. there was no one around. no one to watch her run. no one to interrupt her thoughts and ask her why she was out here so early. there was just her, and sometimes that was the scariest place olivia found herself. alone with her thoughts. shaking her head, along with the rest of her body, allowing a breath of air to escape her lips, she pulled her long hair back into a tight pony tail. sometimes she hated how long her hair was. it got in the way so much when she was running. but olivia couldn't imagine not having her long locks either. they were a part of her, and something that so many people complimented her on. how could she just chop it all off?
with one more long stretch to the sky, olivia took off around the track. her legs fell into the old pattern of running and she smiled as her body sunk into the beat with the ground beneath him. normally, she didn't like to run on the track because there were so many other people around. but there was no one here today, and though she normally liked the adventure of not really knowing where she was going to end up, she did have class in the morning. and running around in circles did seem to have it's appeal this morning. perhaps it was because subconsciously she realized that she was running around in circles in her head, and at least on the track she felt she could outrun what she couldn't in her mind and dreams.
she didn't want to think about her dreams. her dreams hurt. hurt deeper inside of her than she even realized existed. how could something tear someone up so much without them giving permission? as she pushed her legs faster, she tried to push her thoughts out of her head. how could life be so cruel to her? to give her the biggest joy she had ever felt, and then to rip it away from her. hadn't life known she wouldn't be okay with it? and that she wouldn't be okay after? her eyes started to water and she shook her head fiercely as she pushed her body even harder. it was the one thing she could do. her body knew no limits. it was how she could release all the feelings she wanted to scream at the top of her lungs to the world. she wished more than ever right now she could be listening to music to help drown away the dreams of last night. instead, the images of zack flashed through her mind. him laughing, their late night talks. she pushed harder. her legs twinged with pain, but she ignored it. no, she flourished in it. their movie nights and popcorn fights. harder. she didn't want to remember. she didn't want to allow it to be true. her breathing was getting harder without her realizing it. the hospital visits. the last weeks. harder. faster. push. the night they spent together. his last wish before he died. she didn't want to touch her face or admit the clenching of her jaw, as she saw her vision getting blurred. no, she wouldn't. just push harder, she thought, and her legs were on fire. sitting at the hospital. holding his hand. his smile. the goodbyes. her breathing quickened, as her legs seemed to be moving too fast for her to keep up. she tumbled, falling over her feet and onto the track. her hands came out instinctively to catch her fall. it had caught up with her. she had landed on the ground and she allowed herself for the first time in a long time to cry. she wanted more than ever to not. to have outrun the pain this time, but it had caught up on her.
wiping her hands off on her shorts, she sniffled and brought her hands to face to wipe away the continuation of tears. and she just sat there. there was no one around to hear her, to see her. so this time, the past had won and reluctantly she would give into it, and into the pain. she would allow herself to cry. because what else could she do?

the midnight sun had been absent the night before, making his hunting all the more easier. piercing cold blanketed him throughout the night, assisting in clothing the animals that burned with heat. it was a diet that he'd ran with for the past century, more or less giving him adequate strength to break through the hassles of daily events. once a month, after all, could only give so much energy. admittedly, animal blood could not be compared to the taste of human blood, but redundant occurence had just about sated and veiled the bloodlust in him, and to this, he felt most grateful for. denying himself from the evil of his truest nature was his way of clinging to his more subtle human side, that at least enabled him to retract from acting involuntarily attacks of his vampiric impulses.
he pursed his lips, his brows furrowed, eyes narrowing as they settled on the disoriented hufflepuff way, way ahead. it was as if he was right beside her, feeling her grief drain through his fingertips, so close enough to see the tears stream down her cheeks. such vulnerability was enough to keep him his foot grounded on where he stood, but he thought it not enough. he had watched her run, change her pace, feel her heartbeat, read the underlying emotions that played across her small face. he had watched her ever since day broke the dark, in truthful surprise and understanding.
she was olivia, and she was broken.
the sun's rays broke through the horizon and started climbing towards their direction, to which he heaved a reluctant breath for. if he walked to her direction, he was sure to encounter very unanswerable questions. but then again, there was no ignoring the grave deepness of which she emitted more fervently-- in light of this knowledge, he had to take in account the fact that she was more unstable than she had been ever since she entered the school. he wasn't entirely sure that he knew her anymore.
technically speaking, her approach towards life had been shattered since the death of, who he gathered, was her closest friend. she'd secluded herself in the confinements of her solitude, that she could no longer find herself.
this much he concluded, by his own readings, ever since she started missing his classes.
unable to deny his want to comfort, to shelter, he breathe a foggy sigh, and in a blink of an eye, stood right behind her, his movements as quiet as the whispers of the morning winds. needless to say, he would feel powerless when in the company of a crying woman. and this time was no different, except for the fact that he wouldn't use his usual lines to comfort her. sweetheart, if you don't stop crying, i'll have to kiss you would sound not only hugely inappropriate, but would undeniably send out the wrong message. especially to his student.
olivia, he started gently, unwanting to alarm and frighten off. this was perhaps, the first time he saw her letting her emotions gush out in a rush. he walked slowly to her side, and squatted down to her level, scrutinizing every detail etched on her face. she exhibited such distraught, that all he could think of doing was to sit next to her, and turn his front to her, tilting his head to the side, wearing concern on his face. slowly, he reached for both her hands, and lowered them none too hastily. with one hand, he touched her cheek, and gently turned her tear-stained face to him, his face showing pain of her pain. when will you stop running? |

L E T S T Y P E W O R D S C A U S E T H E Y A M O U N T T O N O T H I N G ` pretend you can't take what you've found
olivia hated herself. she hated herself for letting herseld fall apart like this. she hated herself for feeling the way that she did and allowing herself to try and run and hide from all her problems. but when she felt the pain and the hurt like she did now, she understood why she wanted to block them out. it was too much, the reality of the situation too surreal. her heart pounded from running and it pounded from the breaking she felt inside. she could hear or feel nothing, just pain and the sound of her heart pounding in her ears. she sat on the cold ground, absorbed in herself. the first time in a long time she had allowed herself to let go and just cry. tears streamed down her face and she stopped trying to wipe them away. she held onto her knees and rocked slightly back and forth.
she couldn't believe zack was gone, and that pain slowly crept up on her every so often. the only person who knew about everything she felt through in life was taken away from her. how could life be so cruel, she sometimes wondered. to take away everything that was good in her life and replace it with hardship and turmoil. she was wrapped up in her thoughts and tears so much she didn't even hear professor castell come up behind her. when he spoke her name, she jumped slightly, hands immediately going to her face, trying to wipe away her tears. she took a few breaths, trying to regulate her breathing, but it just wasn't working. she didn't want to be seen this way. she wanted to appear as if nothing was wrong, especially in front of a professor.
but professor castell bent down to her level and removed her hands from her face. the gesture was one of the most gentle gestures anyone had ever shown her and made her speechless, almost unsure of how to respond to the kindness and delicateness he was showing her. he held onto her hands with one hand, and brought the other to her face, eyes locking with hers. his hand touched her face and she froze, unaware of whether to relax into the touch or break away from it. neither seemed appropriate, so she remained still, allowing him to touch her. she felt so vulnerable, so unsteady and she had no idea how to deal with people in this state. normally she was laughing, partying or helping others. no one ever offered her help. but then again, no one knew this is what happened when olivia let herself alone.
when will you stop running? he spoke to her and her eyes flushed with another set of tears that threatened to spill. how was she supposed to respond to that? professor castell just discovered her on the ground in a ball, crying her heart out and seemed to know exactly what to say to resonate with olivia. her heart stuttered and she shook her head, not knowing what to say but knowing he was right. another round of tears spilled down her cheeks and she tried to turn away from the professor as it happened. she was so weak, and she didn't want him to judge her.
"i don't want to stop," she responded, her voice sounding strained. "when i stop the pain comes. the pain, the memories, the hurt. when i stop, this is what happens." her voice was shaky, her breath uneven, but she decided she had nothing to lose but to tell him the truth. he had found her after all like this, and he hadn't judged. he had come to her and received her with kindness. but she didn't deserve this kindness. she didn't want to be the victim, she didn't want him to pity her. especially after she had missed his classes and disrespected him the way she had.
she sniffed and rubbed the tears from her face. "but i'm fine. i'm fine now." she tried to stand, unsure of whether or not she could support herself. her legs shook under her. not only from the way she was crying, but the way she had pushed herself running. she didn't mind the pain when she was running, but when she stopped she became unsteady. she got to her feet, distancing herself from professor castell. he didn't need to deal with this. a crying student on his morning off probably. this was not his problem and olivia was not about to make it his problem. her problems were hers alone and no one deserved to deal with them. "honest, this was nothing," she spoke not making direct eye contact with him. "i'm just going to go back to my room, shower and get ready for the day. i'm fine. i'm fine." she kept saying she was fine, even though she knew she wasn't and he probably did as well. but maybe if she said it enough he would believe her. maybe if she said it enough she would believe it too.

the tears, much to his relief, seemed to have paused from their pouring, which brought him back more comfort and therefore more confidence to still be in the company of a tear-faced lady. he kept to where he was, with pursed lips and a scrutinizing stare, noting the disinclination for her eyes to meet his, and wondering whether she had opened that closed door to anyone before. in reality, truthfully, he doubted as much, for he only often found her in the company of one or two friends, and those times weren't even constant or prolonged. for her heart, as he could now clearly see, was now lying in fragments, unable to be repaired by her own hands. so perhaps, the deep, welling sorrow in her chest had a much deeper hole in it, though unfortunately to which she had barricaded and tried to forget about ever since it was made.
in this sense, he could safely concluded that, which such overwhelming turmoil and distress radiating from her real, open self, as oppposed to her distant, wild façade that she was now more accustomed to wear. how could such an idea be formulated, that he would just erase the sight of one of his students, disintegrated and crying herself vulnerable? was that what she'd been doing all this time, trying to erase and forget the most devastatingly impacting things that have barraged her over and over?
how.. very, very sorrowful. he pursed his lips as he hang his head curtly, before following suit and rising to meet the warming rays of the sun breathe on the side of his face. for a moment, they stood, a good distance between them. and then suddenly, he closed it, wrapping his arms around her in a gentle, yet firm embrace, cheek-to-cheek as he replied lowly, you cannot keep pretending that you cannot take what you have found. you cannot run forever, liv. because he knew. and because he understood the extremities of the pain she felt, however much different her form of pain was to him. understandably, emotional pain was much more traumatic and could take a very long time to restore to a state of normality. he did not wish to know the consequences of the path she chose to take after the demise of her loved one, or the desire to let her on to complete her descent to eternal downfall. tears are words the heart cannot express, he continued, eyes softening, they are needed to wash the eyes, for you to see life with a clearer view once more.
he raised his face, and leaned it down to her forehead, lips placing a kiss on the top of her head. he then withdrew, simultaneously removing his jacket and placing it over her shoulders, as well as his scarf around her neck-- he had just, after all, realized that the crisp air would not tone down to its usual mellow breeze. i don't believe that you wish to welcome the day in such a state just yet, he took a few steps back, gestured to the forbidden forest, and smiled at her as he turned his heel, stride in casual and hands in pockets.
though i think perhaps, this may be the best time for you to make up for my classes. don't you? |

L E T S T Y P E W O R D S C A U S E T H E Y A M O U N T T O N O T H I N G ` pretend you can't take what you've found
she could hear herself right? she could hear the doubt in her voice and the way that she was lying through her teeth. but her face remained straight and her mouth stayed tight, so she would not show how much she was struggling inside. somewhere deep inside she was grateful that someone was here. that someone finally got to see her upset and crying and realize that there was something wrong with her. but another part of her was confused about how she felt about it being a professor, and professor castell of all professors. she felt embarrassed. she had missed his classes several times now because she had been too hungover to get out of bed, or because she hadn't completed the required readings. she felt embarrassed as well because he was a professor she quite liked. ever since he had come to hogwarts he had always been kind to the hufflepuff and always welcoming to questions or concerns of his students. he also was fairly young compared to the majority of the staff at hogwarts and therefore seemed to relate to the students better. olivia always seemed to have a laugh or two in his class and generally would learn something every class.
but as she stood there, him staring at her and looking into her eyes that she tried so hard to avoid, she became aware of him being so much more of a professor just trying to be nice to a student who had crumbled and needed assistance. somehow she felt like maybe he understood. maybe, just maybe, he could sense just how badly she was hurting inside and how hard she was trying to fight it. and as she stood there looking at him and wondering just how quickly she could walk away, he did something that olivia hadn't realized she had needed. he covered the distance between them and took her in his arms, holding her against his body. at first olivia didn't know what to do. a teacher hugging her? but quickly the thought passed out of her mind and she relaxed into his arms. they felt so right, and she felt so right in them. no one had ever held her like this. never in her life had someone taken her and just held her as if she was free to cry and free of worry. never had someone made her feel so protected. she fell into his arms even more, and wrapped her arms around him, allowing herself this freedom to hold someone and to share her pain and worry.
and no one had ever said the things that he was saying to her. the words slipped from his lips and hit a hard truth for olivia, but the way he said it was kind and gentle. he was making so much sense, and she hated to admit it to herself but what he was saying was right. she knew that she had yet to grieve and really allow herself time to cry for zack. instead she tried to run away and bottle up everything inside, trying to escape the memory of her best friend. but tears were supposed to be good right? everyone said that at the beginning. get everything out and then you can move on. but olivia hadn't wanted to move on. she had wanted to go backwards to a time when zack was fine and she was spending the holidays with his family and away from her abusive one. now she had no one to talk to about her family either. but perhaps this crying thing really was good for her. she felt better than she did, right? that olivia couldn't answer. the pain seemed to be too close to the surface. but perhaps it was a start.
professor castell shifted slightly from their embracing position and lightly kissed the top of her head. before olivia could really process what he had done he had pulled away and placed his jacket over her shoulders, and scarf around her neck. "thank you." olivia hadn't realized the chill in the air, but as she pulled the jacket snugger to her body, she could feel the goosebumps developing on her arms. she turned her face upwards towards the professor, unaware of what was happening between them. she had never looked or thought about him in a way that was becoming more and more present. he was a professor after all, but an attractive, handsome man who just so happened to seemed to care.
"i don't believe that you wish to welcome the day in such a state just yet. though i think perhaps, this may be the best time for you to make up for my classes. don't you?" as he spoke the words and gestured towards the forest, olivia suddenly became very aware of the fact that he was now wanting her to go into the forbidden forest. forbidden being the key word. she didn't know if it were her place or not, but she spoke up regardless, "into the forbidden forest? students aren't allowed in there... and what do you suggest for making up the classes?" olivia was careful around the subject of classes, wanting to make up for them but nervous about the way he perhaps intended her to do so. olivia might have been bold when it came to partying, but she had never been one to disobey one of the biggest rules of hogwarts and go into the forbidden forest. but she was with a teacher, and someone who was making her feel safe. could she really trust him?

in retrospect, he wondered why he needed to worry at all. he'd only ever given his non-beating heart to one damsel, which, to some unfortunate state, did not end up working at all. in truth, he'd been set to be betrothed for another vampire since birth, but to which he did not feel the inclination to acquiese to. he attempted to follow the footsteps of the rogue gene in his family, but he had not accounted for the fact that his obsesser and apparent wife-to-be was a vampire through and through; hence, the decapitated head of the one he once loved, on the front door step of his house several mornings later. it was a lesson taught in the most painful way possible, and just about set him on his way to become willingly trapped in the woven web of inevitable deceit. since then, it had not been in his best interest to look beyond the physical of a woman, in any way that would suggest a more potent relationship.
it was a subtle shame that he could not bring himself no longer, and it was how it was supposed to be. so why did he not just wed the one woman he couldn't bring himself to love? these strings attached were mere calibrations to what was the general norm way of lifestyle in his family, and would not be hanging the safety of the people he surrounded himself with by blade point of a knife. to which albus had assured him most definitely that as long as he was the headmaster, no harm would befall those occupying it.
now the real danger remaining, was the demon lurking inside.
no, he wasn't free of it, after all. to delude himself from thinking that he control other emotions was just not practical, and the crying had hit him rock bottom. he knew it was dangerous from the start, getting close and pouring out unnecessary decadents that were inevitable to succeed. although it was true that most of what he said was to clog the emotional outpour as to no longer be in a weakened state when in the company of one such, his previous words were meant to be hammered down in permanent understanding and care. the much that he felt was that she loved him; the only factor he was looking at was if she was willing to go so far as to join him. that moment, he felt that he was suddenly being pulled from the earthen reality of it all, and diving into something much more than friendly. hastily, he scolded himself. even though he had a knack for reading shifts in the air and emotions, he would do everything in his power to veer this the right way. even if it did involve a lesson, in the most dangerous part of the school.
students are not allowed, of course, without the consent and supervision of a teacher. more or less |
[/b], he took a moment to keep his eyes on her, then directed his gaze on to the brooding shadows underneath the shading leaves, narrowing his eyes as he caught a glimpse of flashing silver streaking away from the edge and back into the shelter of the forest. perhaps it was not his finest moment of uplifiting or refining, but it would certainly do for a different morning to be had. today was going to be different, and he would be damned if he was to fail from it. however, if you would prefer for another time, i certainly won't mind to make time. he smiled at her picturesque, her petit stature masked in his jacket, noting rather appreciatively of how she indulged in its warmth from the prickling cold breeze. i would just like to let you know that i shall endeavour with my full power, to evoke a feeling of contenment by the end our time together. he reached out a hand, eyes ever scrutinizing. trust me. L E T S T Y P E W O R D S C A U S E T H E Y A M O U N T T O N O T H I N G ` pretend you can't take what you've found
the air of the cool autumn morning began to prickle her skin. she pulled the jacket professor castell had wrapped around her closer to her body, smell the scent of the man as she did so. it was intoxicating, the comfort a mere smell could have, and the protection a jacket simply laying over her shoulders could have on the broken girl. olivia had completely broken down, and was now on her way to recovering from her crying fit this morning, and she was nervous about just how professor castell was going to take her mind off things. a lesson, he had suggested and olivia would agree to it. she had nothing this morning to do, and she did owe him a few classes that she had skipped. but the idea of going into the forbidden forest had never crossed her mind. in the six years she had been at hogwarts she had followed that rule very closely and never wandered off into the woods. there were things in that woods that olivia knew were dangerous and she was not willing to put her odds into the hands of the creatures roaming around in there. but as she looked at professor castell, she couldn't help but feel he wouldn't put her in harms way. he was a teacher after all, but he refused to tell her what they would be doing in the woods.
olivia eyed him suspiciously, wondering whether or not this would be her one and only chance to make up the classes that she had missed. this probably was not the most conventional way, she thought, but perhaps unconventional was what she needed. still, she didn't like surprises, and stared at professor castell as he continued to speak, her mind trying to decide whether or not it was safe enough to go with him. "students are not allowed, of course, without the consent and supervision of a teacher. more or less." olivia nodded and licked her lips as she realized that this was alright. "alright," she spoke softly, agreeing to go into the woods with the professor. she couldn't pretend that the forest made her nervous, but she evened out her breath as she took a step closer to where the professor stood. she would do this for him, she would do this to make up for the classes she had missed because she respected him. it seemed apparent that she was nervous, as he further continued about the fact that they could make this up another time. that he was more than willing to do that. sure, another time, sitting in a boring classroom doing lines or extra homework assignments, olivia distastefully thought. no, this was better. this was one on one time with a teacher, who wasn't even really treating her like a student, but as a peer, and giving her the chance to learn something new by being hands on. olivia liked that idea better, and responded to the professor. "no, i'd rather go now. i have no classes until this afternoon, and i'd like to make up the time with you now. i want to see what surprise you have hidden for me," she smiled lightly, eyes meeting with professor castells.
"i would just like to let you know that i shall endeavour with my full power, to evoke a feeling of contenment by the end our time together," he spoke and olivia couldn't help but feel a swelling in her heart. he cared about her well-being and cared about how she felt. he wanted to make her feel better and that was something not many people even attempted to do anymore. olivia had always just shrugged it off, knowing that no matter what anyone did she would never be able to be happy again. but for some reason, as she looked at her professor, she wondered why she felt that perhaps he could help her, help her change and let go of her past. it was a strange observation to make, especially because anyone who had found the poor girl crying on the ground would have probably assisted with her, and therefore, made her feel better. but olivia felt that perhaps he cared more than he should have, considering they were professor and student. and though olivia would normally have minded a professor finding her, she was surprised by the comfort and relaxation she had in his presence.
he held out his hand to olivia, echoing the words "trust me. olivia didn't know why, but she did. after so long of not being able to trust anyone, here professor castell was, offering her his hand and she trusted him. she trusted he wouldn't harm her, and that he would protect her from the harm of the forbidden forest. she knew she was in good hands with him. olivia's eyes turned to professor castell's face, a small smile spreading across her lips. she reached out and took his hand in hers, the skin to skin contact making her stomach do a somersault and her breath catch in her throat. "i trust you," she spoke looking towards the professor. "now lead the way."
