They had just gotten out of Charms class and October always took a while to clean up her stuff, making sure to ask her sister as many questions as she could about the current assignment or anything she didn't really understand. Although they were twins, their personalities were completely different; October enjoyed being patient and helping and listening, where her sister was very impatient and just wanted to do whatever she had to do, even if that meant leaving you in the dust. Though she always helped October, you could tell that there was something better she'd rather be doing then staying in the Charms classroom and listening to her sister ask more and more questions. October sighed and told her sister that she would just catch up with her later and saw her sister dash out of the room. Sitting in her chair, flustered, October looked at her notebook again, sure that she wasn't going to be able to do any of the work that the Professor had assigned to them. Six years later and she still couldn't understand what was going on.
October was never really good at Wizarding subjects. She was really good at the simple muggle subjects; math, science, english. But she was never good at the difficult subjects you had to learn at Hogwarts. That's why she would always ask her sister questions, even if she didn't like it when October would always be there with more questions to ask. It was hard for her and her sister to ever get along because of how bad October was at these subjects. Her sister would shrug her off sometimes too. She didn't really have anyone to go to at that point for help. The ginger let out a puff and stood up, picking up her books and walking out the door into the corridor. There were busy people walking through the hall, on their way to the great hall or where ever they may be going. October's robes billowed behind her as she walked in the crowd, another crowd heading the opposite direction. She was short, so she really didn't stand out in the crowd, merely blending in and not being able to see over anyone.
She ran into what felt like a wall and dropped everything, including her books. She put her hand to her head for a second and dropped her head down. Being used to some sort of abuse for being clumsy, she always expected it at this point. She started to stutter to the poor person she had run into. "I-I'm sorry," she mumbled, "I couldn't see where I was going and I am so sorry." Never looking up once to see who the poor stranger was, she started to pick up her books and kept her head down. How was she supposed to make it up to this person? What if they were in Slytherin and just... Well, she didn't know. She finally looked up to see Rudolphus Lestrange standing in front of her. Though, very attractive, he made October shudder a little in fear of what he could do to her. Of course she knew him, not personally but from what she heard and seeing him in classes. She waited to see if he would say anything to her or just let him scurry on her little way back to the Hufflepuff Common room. |

as he faced the sun he cast no shadow, Charms class was pointless. The subject was insufferably boring and ridiculously easy. He didn’t have the patience to sit through the lesson and listen to Flitwick squeak on about spells that Rod didn’t want or really need to learn. Annoyingly however he did not want to fail the class. He had too much pride for that and as clever as he could be, he did actually need to attend lessons to learn the curriculum else he would be stumped when it came to the exams. He stormed in fifteen minutes late. Flitwick tried and failed to sound cross. Rod couldn’t take the goblin-man seriously and so the professor’s attempts to reprimand him were futile. And once the spell they would be learning had been explained, Rod grabbed his bag (which he hadn’t even bothered to unpack) and left the room again without a backwards glance. There was no way he was sticking around to do the work. He’d practise the charm in his own good time.
He headed to the library since he had a free period next and he intended to spend it in the restricted section, reading up on the Dark Arts. Now that was a more satisfying and interesting subject. He reached the library however when he realised that he’d left his jacket in the charms classroom and would have to go back for it. It was designer; he’d paid a lot of money for it. Letting out a frustrated sigh he turned on his heel and tracked back the way he had come; drawing strange looks from the students he had passed on the way who were obviously confused by his sudden reappearance. But they didn’t bother him about it, which was a wise move on their parts. The end of the period was approaching and classes were starting to filter out. Students parted like the red sea to allow him through and he smirked arrogantly. People knew better than to get in his way. He threw open the classroom door, thankful that Flitwick was no longer there to start lecturing him again. He threw on his jacket and stalked from the room once more.
Rod left the classroom, entered the throng of people and was walked straight into by somebody. ”Watch where you’re going!” He snarled, whirling around to catch the perpetrator. He stumbled backwards as books and folders began toppling down in front of him and the students that were still making their way through the corridors started to give them a wide birth once they realised Rodolphus was involved in the situation. His eyes darted around, looking for the person and it took him a moment or two to realise that they were crouched down, gathering up their belongings. It took him less time to recognise her as October Madley. Pretty to look at but she was a half-blood so he wasn't sure he particularly wanted to touch. ”Do you use your eyes?” He demanded of her, not bothering to help her collect her stuff. He didn’t do anything for anyone else unless there was something in it for him. He was in the mood to pick a fight and unfortunately for October, she had given him the perfect excuse. ”I’m not exactly easy to miss.” He stated, waving his arm up and down his body, indicating his six foot three inch height.

Rudolphus was someone who could destroy you in a matter of seconds. He was like a brick wall, a tower. October was only five feet tall. There wasn't much she could do to win in a fight against Rudolphus. She didn't even want to fight, she wanted to run away and to just disappear. That wasn't too much to ask was it? Get all the attention away from her, since she didn't even mean to do it anyway. She was just heading to the dungeons to get to Hufflepuff common room. It wasn't that bad! She figured that Rudolphus thought differently though. She didn't want to be the brunt of his rage, she had seen him get into a fight once, and well. It was not the prettiest thing in the world. He had rage and she knew it, and she didn't want to be here, be underneath his rage. She didn't know why he wanted to fight with her, and her emotions and her stress level was flaring out of control with just the mere thought of him getting into a small fight with him. Maybe not physical, but she had a feeling there were going to be words thrown around. Why did she have to find him attractive?
She started to stutter, "I was... I just..." but she couldn't get the words out. She knew that he wouldn't like that, and that he would probably make a rude remark, degrading her in some way, probably about her blood status. She knew that there was a possibility of him hitting her or something else. Probably not in public, though October would never really know for sure unless it happened to her. She just hoped she would never be humiliated by him in public. It wasn't her thing. Hating the attention that she was getting, even if it wasn't that much at all, October stopped talking and kept her eyes on the ground. She didn't want to draw more attention then there already was. Her mind blew up the attention that was drawn on her, since she just hated it so much and her stress level was easily elevated. And while the attention was mostly drawn to the tall, strong, attractive man that was standing before her, that didn't mean that October wasn't feeling the heat herself.
"I was trying to go to the Hufflepuff common room," she said quietly. She didn't even know if Rudolphus heard her, but she didn't care. If he didn't hear her, he would let everyone know. She started playing with her robes, the other arm holding her books against her body. The hand on her robes was pulling at different threads, getting old with age. She knew she had needed new ones at Diagon Alley, but her family couldn't really afford it. Her dad having a muggle job and her mom spending all their time at the ministry working, and yet they still couldn't make ends meet. They had to get robes for her little brother, and so October and her sister got the cold shoulder. She would never explain that to any Slytherin though. They already scoff at her blood status, they didn't need to scoff at her monetary status too. She just needed to leave Rudolphus, and she'd stop thinking about how poor and feeble she was compared to him. |

as he faced the sun he cast no shadow, It was quite easy for Rodolphus to tell when someone was scared and October was giving off all of the signals of a terrified schoolgirl. He could see it in her eyes that all she wanted to do was leave his presence as quickly as possible. It was seeing that fear that made Rodolphus want to exploit her further. Trap her here and prolong her anxiety for as long as possible because he got a kick out of that. Watching her gaze lower and stare resolutely at the ground, her feet shuffle, her words tumble out of her mouth, mumbling her apology, scared of his reaction to it all. It made him feel powerful. And like he had some sort of power of her which in essence he did. He could relieve her of her guilt with just a simple smile and ‘no worries, have a nice day.’ Or he could prolong it by snarling at her, narrowing his eyes and making her feel worse, cutting her down and making her feel two inches tall. And quite honestly, the latter option to Rod was the much more appealing one. It was the Lestrange way to punish.
Besides, she had walked into him, he was right, he wasn’t hard to miss and he was Rodolphus Lestrange, he deserved a hell of a lot more respect. She’d been at this school for as long as he had, she should know how to act around him by now, she should know that whenever he was around you moved out of his way and you did not look him in the eye unless you wanted cursing. It was a fact. It was also a fact that Rod quite liked to fight when you did something to irritate him. He knew he could win, especially when he came up against people like October where he didn’t even need to get out of second gear in order to successfully intimidate her. In all honesty, it was all too easy that it was almost boring. Just standing, glaring at her, lip curled with disgust was enough to make her cower. Although he quite liked people that would bend over backwards to give him what he wanted and he disliked having to put much effort into a fight, things did get a little repetitive. He was getting tired of being the temperamental Slytherin that had to go crazy whenever someone did something to piss him off.
So maybe he didn’t have to hex her today. It would be a shame to ruin her anyway. He couldn’t help but think that she really was quite attractive. Sure she could do with a new pair of robes; personally Rodolphus wouldn’t be seen dead in anything as tatty as what she was wearing. Not everyone was as fortunate as him of course, but then that was why he was better than her. He smirked, shaking his head, his expression leaning more towards amused than angry now. ”I don’t really care where you were going." He said bluntly, his tone however not very sharp anymore. "Maybe you should be a little more careful. Or do I have to hex you to get my point across?” He licked his lips, letting his gaze rake her up and down. ”You’re half blood aren’t you?” He demanded of her, already almost certain that the answer to that question was yes. He couldn’t fail to wipe the disappointment from his face as he folded his arms across his chest. If he didn’t have a magical outlet for his rage then he became quite flirtatious however he didn’t want to be seen checking out the half-blood, even if he could do with someone as compliant as her. Still, he let his expression soften considerably; it could be quite fun to mess her about and besides he could switch back to angry quicker than a flash if he so wished.

She knew that if she told him what she really was, it would make everything worse. If she lied, and said that she was a pure blood, what would happen? She was in tatty robes, she was a Hufflepuff, would he really take it easier on her if she wasn't a half-blood? She bit her lower lip, still debating in her head. She hoped that he took it as her being shy instead of her having a full on debate in her head. Since if he ever found out that she was going to lie to him, he would probably beat her senseless. Though, it wasn't like she wasn't used to that. She was used to being beaten on by men, she was a passive person and she didn't want other people getting hurt. It wasn't that she enjoyed getting beaten, but if it was by someone that she loved, she didn't care. She loved them, didn't want them to leave. She felt knew that he would beat her, torture her, if he ever found out. Maybe even before them if he was in a particular torturing mood. Hopefully he wasn't today. October didn't want to get hurt through this, but she'd do anything to get out of this awkward situation, even lie about social status.
"I'm a pure blood," she said. She made herself believe that she was, just so that her face didn't start burning from the fact that she was lying. She couldn't be found out, not if it meant being hexed and tortured by him. not that torture would be a bad thing. She shook the inappropriate thought out of her head. She couldn't think about sleeping with him. She wasn't that kind of girl, not really. Of course, what kind of person didn't like sex. But one night stands weren't her thing, and she was sure that Mr. Lestrange would not have a relationship with a Hufflepuff. She'd be lucky if he even thought about her like that, since most Slytherins were very into social status. She was not up there on the social status and she knew it. She bit her lower lip softly, hoping that he would believe her and hoping that he wouldn't hurt her because of her not true blood status. She looked down at the ground and back up to him, alternating in long intervals. There was nothing more she hated than anticipation and she was dying to know what he would do with this new information. As long as none of her friends blabbed, she was in the clear with him. Maybe something could come out of it?
She didn't usually get like this. Only with really attractive men. And who could deny that Rudolphus was not attractive? She sure couldn't. Taking in his features, she drowned out the sounds of everyone around her. The shaggy hair, the chiseled bone structure, the muscles that one could tell he had even with those Slytherin robes on, how clean and neat those robes were on him. He was basically a God standing in front of a mere peasant. At least in appearance. In personality he was a mere snake, just like the Slytherin on his robes. He didn't care about anyone but someone with status and with money, which is not October at all. He believed that Slytherins were the best house and he was just someone that October probably shouldn't even get into at all. She couldn't help it though. It'd been a while since she had someone who would even recognize her as someone with any appealing features at all. And if he did, she would jump on it. She would be hurt, because she'd probably start to like him... But she couldn't help it. She needed it. She needed someone like him who could help her and tell her what to do. That's what she liked and that's what she needed. And that's what Rudolphus could give if they ever got together in any sort of way. |

as he faced the sun he cast no shadow, Rod wasn’t one to pay attention to other people. He couldn’t put names to many faces within the school because he simply didn’t care. There were even people within his year group who he had shared countless number of classes with that he didn’t have a clue as to what their names were. They probably considered themselves incredibly lucky because not many people wanted to have his attention. October, well he knew her name, knew her as that quiet Hufflepuff girl but that was it. Frankly it was a surprise that he even knew her name let alone her house. Never before had he been interested in her except perhaps from a quiet distance to check out her appearance but he’d never gotten hung up on her; he could get his fair share of female attention from worthier sources, Bellatrix being his favourite. October was just another face in the crowd. Until now.
Everything about her screamed attractive and although she did go down in his book as hot, it was her personality that was ultimately winning him over. He was quite used to people cowering in his presence but there was something different about October, something that made him think that he could really take advantage of this girl, push her around, bully her into doing whatever he wanted and she would comply, probably without complaint if he manipulated her well enough. He knew how people like her worked. Give them a little attention, just enough, and you could do anything and they’d still come crawling back. But he had to find out for sure and a plan was forming in his mind so that even if she was in fact half-blood, he could still win, he’d just have to miss out on her body. (Because he was not making the mistake of sleeping with a half-blood again that was for sure.)
He waited patiently for her response and then she said the words that made his eyes light up. She was a pureblood. It wasn’t unheard of for Rod to not know of all of the purebloods in the school, not all of them were death eater sympathisers after all but he was going to be cautious about this. Even if on another day, if he hadn’t already made the mistake of letting Ellen Leyden fall into his bed, he would have been quite happy to simply take her word for it because his desire for her was overwhelming. He smiled his well-worn, handsome, crooked smile. ”I didn’t know.” He said, his voice sounding almost apologetic, as if it would make her look and feel guilty if she weren’t telling the truth. ”Your family must keep away from all of those pureblood gatherings?” He upturned the last word, making it sound like a question, his tone off-hand but his eyes and ears were sharp, waiting for a possible slip-up. He licked his lips. ”If you’re lying to me. . .” He trailed off, leaving his threat hanging.
He hoped she was either a rubbish liar or telling the truth. He so desperately wanted to flirt with her, manipulate her and eventually toss her aside. She was just the distraction he needed since recently his life seemed to be going nowhere but downhill. This would go a long way to mending his broken ego and sorting his feelings on Ellen. It was about time he did something cold-hearted.

She didn't feel her face heating up, she didn't feel any of that. It was a first for her, and she didn't know if it was because she wanted so badly to have Rudolphus believe her, or because she was growing some kind of back bone. She assumed it was the first one and sunk back into her shell, her shy shell. She stopped playing with her robes, making herself aware that she was making him aware of how tatty they were. Which wasn't too much, but to someone like him, it was enough. She knew she had needed new robes, had told her parents. She had thought about this before. Her sister's face flashed into her mind and she pushed it away, her face becoming slightly angry. She was sick of her sister taking everything. Maybe she was growing a back bone. Rudolphus could probably single-handedly kill it, but she didn't know that at this point. She just hoped that she could contain that proud thoughts she had in her head long enough to not have him hex her, beat her, whatever he was planning to do to a half blood that got in his way. She would continue the act until she couldn't any longer. She needed to protect herself in her shy shell.
At the mention of her parents not bringing her to any of those parties, she didn't reply. She hated the thought of her parents, the way they were there when she was little and then they left her in charge, leaving her brother and sister to drift away was something she couldn't stand to think of. And it was all her parent's fault. She didn't know what to say, didn't know if she should say something. Whatever was the right answer, she chose to say something. "My parents don't really hang around to take my out anywhere. Or my family," she said. It was somewhat truthful, which meant that her blush wouldn't turn up. She hated that lie detector that her face held. But for this particular situation, she was doing a damn good job to maintain it, to make sure that it wasn't going off, turning her face red. And she hoped that it stayed that way every time she talked Rudolphus, or her secret would be up far sooner than she wanted it to be.
She didn't know what else to say, so she didn't say anything. The people in the corridor had moved, probably fleeing faster as they saw Rudolphus. They were smart. Because October didn't follow their lead, she was stuck in the same situation as they were. And she didn't really like it. She hated feeling like she was underneath someone, but that seemed to be the situation she was stuck in all the time. It was good though, since it made her passive. It made her be able to stand behind someone while they did all the talking, and that was something she enjoyed. She hated talking for herself, telling her opinions, telling anything about herself. It was nice to keep to herself but sometimes she just got sick of it. Oh well, she was in it for herself right now and that's how it was going to be for a little while. Until Rudolphus found out her lie. |

as he faced the sun he cast no shadow, He felt his lips twitch at the certainty of her words. There was something about the way she said it that made him believe her. He’d replied to people like that before and it made Rod remember that that was what made him such a good liar, because he was able to be convincing about his words and make people believe him. But then was October in the same mould as him when it came to deceiving people? He wasn’t certain that she was. Underestimating other people’s strengths was bound to be Rodolphus’ downfall one day, but for now, he was ignorant to the fact that some people could lie very well or become very strong in the face of adversity.
And so he nodded at her, just once, almost as if automatically, his respect levels for her had raised which in a sense they had. Being pureblood meant that he had to at least show her some level of courtesy, even if her family might not be major sympathisers of the dark side, it was important to keep all of the pureblood families in one piece, they were needed to create the new world order of just pureblood wizards. That didn’t mean he wasn’t going to take advantage of her anymore, of course he was. He kept the crooked smile on his face, determined to be charming now. The only time he was ever really pleasant was when he was talking to a girl that he was interested in. Otherwise he was pretty much constantly mad at the world.
He raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued at the comment about her parents leaving her out. Rod hadn’t exactly had a conventional upbringing himself, his father more interested in opening another bottle and his mother caught up in the next social gathering. They’d always made appearances at pureblood parties, put on the happy family front, his father doing his best to act sober and not show them up and Rod had been brought up surrounded by elitists and obviously to hate those that weren’t but otherwise he or his brother hadn’t been shown a great deal of affection, even from their mother who Rod favoured though only slightly because he felt sorry for her being unable to stand up to their father whenever he turned into the raging, violent drunkard. And so the thought that maybe October wasn’t happy with her ‘perfect pureblood family’ either actually struck a chord with him as Rod could never help but feel jealous when he looked at families such as the Potter’s and the Black’s steeped in glory throughout history, the picture of perfect, noble pureblood superiority . Even if James and Sirius were now blood traitors.
”You’re not close with your family either? I know how that feels.” However true his words were, he honestly didn’t care if her family hated her or whatever it was that made her sound so bitter; it was simply all part of his manipulating plan. He needed to blatantly show her that he was interested now and that meant getting on her good side. ”It can make you feel pretty rough, I know. But I have a good way of dealing with it.” A small smirk played upon his lips, the meaning in his words obvious to him but not necessarily to October. ”If you ever need someone to pick you up then I’m your man.” Get her good and drunk, get her into bed. Such a class act, Rodolphus.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: dddddd; border: #cccccc solid 8px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;] I'M TRYING REAL HARD TO NOT SHAKE I'M BITING MY TONGUE The Words: 533 The Outfit: her robes Tagged rudolphus lestrange October looked at him. He seemed to look at her with more respect, and his voice wasn't as harsh. It was a good change. So she had done it, she had convinced him. He still was nervous, but even the slightest slip of her composure would blow her cover. And she would be hit, probably harder than ever before. She would get used to it, but for now, she wouldn't think about it. She'd focus on the fact that she got acceptance from Rodolphus Lestrange. It was something she never thought was going to happen in her lifetime, and yet there she was, standing in front of him, having him share his empathy with her. She wasn't sure if he had felt it on the degree that she felt her family issues, and she wasn't going to tell him about her situation in order to find out. So she just kept her pink lips shut so that nothing bad could come out of her mouth. The less Rodolphus knew about her, the better her life would be. And she was hoping that she could make her life out for the best in order to make everything better for her.
"Really?" she asked, her voice quieter than she thought, "What do you do?" She hoped that he didn't ask people for help. She didn't think that was his thing though, since he was the one who usually ragged on people for their mistakes. If they even just looked at him wrong, there was something he had to do about it. And that's what got poor October into this situation here. She wasn't looking where she was going. It wasn't her fault, maybe it was his for not looking ahead while she was looking down. It didn't matter though, he blamed her, and therefore, she believed it was all her fault. She was very easy to persuade, and she was very gullible. Not that she wanted to be, but because she had been pushed around all her life, but not only her friends but her family too. And she knew that by the end of all of this, she would be pushed around by Rodolphus too. And yet she let herself fall into the trap that she was so familiar with. The trap where she thought he actually cared, when she knew he didn't and this was going to end in tears.
She looked at the ground, and before he could even reply to her question, she said, "Could you show me?" There was no point in waiting to find out how to take the pain away, she was just going to take a chance and go with it. Even if it ended badly, at least she'd forget about it for a while right? She hoped that it helped, because if this didn't help, then there would be a problem and she would probably end up feeling like this for the rest of her life. And that would kill her more than just feeling like this for a little while. She looked up at the tall man and hoped that it was something powerful, something that would make her forget for even a little while. |

as he faced the sun he cast no shadow, Rod smiled, kindly. He wanted to smirk triumphantly, wanted to let his eyes light up with the prospect, wanted to illustrate just how dangerous he could be. But he didn’t let it show, he couldn’t scare her, so instead he simply gave her a kind smile and a gracious nod of his head. ”Sure. Have you got classes this afternoon? If you’re not bothered about missing them then we can go now.” October had spent the past six years sharing some lessons with Rod, she should full well know that he didn’t particularly care about attending his classes. He’d quite happily miss his lessons. Not only that but he was eager to get on and corrupt her whilst he had her in his grips. If she left him now and went off and talked to her friends about this encounter then they would persuade her to leave him alone. Some girls could spot men like Rodolphus from a mile off, he didn’t particularly care for women like that.
He gave her his slightly charming slightly attitude-filled smirk. He was the ‘bad boy’ who if he showed interest in you, you didn’t shrug him off because everyone wanted a piece of him really and Rod knew it. Coming to stand next to her now he considered her his equal and draping his arm around her shoulders, he spoke. ”Are you much of a drinker, October? Because alcohol is the best medicine for this. Trust me.” His tone was persuasive. His words spoken with such belief and authority you’d have to be a strong person to disagree with him. The power exuded from him in waves that were hard to ignore; it was that reason that made people make way for him, made this corridor empty much quicker than it usually would have done. This was what he was good at; manipulating people to believe him, to follow him and to do as he told them too. Whether it be because he had a certain way with words, or because some people were just easy to charm or even blackmail was used time to time.
