one more day down these stairs, his room is cold now and it hurts like hell. he holds tight, he stares. it’s almost over and it’s running through his head. they don’t know me, they don’t know more than i show.
-------------------- Alright, so it wasn't exactly her fault that she had nearly exploded on a boy in her Transfigurations class about ten minutes prior. It was pretty regular that she got irritated and frustrated with others when they began ripping on Severus Snape, but when they did it right next to her and loud enough for her to hear every little snide comment and every tiny scoff and insult? Lita wasn't stupid - she chose not to speak... didn't mean she couldn't speak, nor did it mean she couldn't hear everything going on. The cruel remarks about how much he needed to get a pounding later had made Lita huff in rage, throw her chair back, and wheel around to glare at the boys. They had stared at her a moment, then burst out laughing. What could "the mute girl" do? Glare them to death? The youth had slammed her text book down, stared at them with a furrowed brow, then tromped out of the class so quickly, the professor didn't even know what had happened until the class was shouted at to stop their laughter and snickering.
Red-faced, Lita didn't exactly know where she was going, but she followed the trails along the south side of the school. Her pace slowed as she calmed herself down, taking deep breaths and counting backwards from ten... the whole shebang. How could they do such a thing? It was bad enough it seemed the entirety of Hogwarts had a hate on for Severus, but the fact of the matter was, there were way worse off others in the school. Why didn't they target them? Why didn't they target her? Any other person in the school could get bullied, and Lita wouldn't give a rat's behind! But Severus... that poor young man. He was just misunderstood, right? A sigh escaped the strawberry blonde as she stared at her booted feet, a furrow of her brows expressing her inner turmoil. It wasn't more than a good ten minutes before she found herself scenting the crisp fresh air of the lake. Sky blue's lifted from the ground to peer at the deep water, and she almost found herself shivering. No way could she ever get too close to the water, let alone swim in it like others had the tendency to do. It was far, far too dangerous!
Turning to a tree close enough to the water, yet still far enough away for her to feel comfortable, Lita offered another sigh, leaning against the strong trunk quietly and staring up at the fluffy whisps of white that streaked across the brightly blue painted sky. It was beautiful - something Lita could sit and stare at for hours, if it wasn't for the sound of foot falls that caught her off guard. Perking up, the girl pushed herself behind the tree a bit more until it sounded as if the sound of walking had all but vanished. Was she hearing things? Hearing animals? Did she successfully hide from another student? Running a hand through her hair, Lita pushed herself from the tree slowly, peeking her head around the other side of the trunk before finally taking a few steps back... and bumping into another body.
Blue's widened, and she was about to hold her hands up in an apology... until she turned herself around and froze in spot. Severus Snape. Lips parted at an audible gasp, and as if her body lived on betraying her, a deep red blush washed over her cheeks. "Heh-buh..." Oh, smooth. Why not mumble incoheriently some more, Lita. Makes those rumors about you being stupid all the more true. Swallowing hard, Lita took in a shakey breath, trying to calm her nerves and keep her cool. Oh, Sev. Your rigid features and tall, handsome, amazingly good looks. How you could render any normal speaking girl speechless. Brushing her bangs from her face with a swipe of her hand, the girl almost jumped at the realization she was just standing there. Staring. Like an idiot. At the boy she was all starry-eyed over since second year. Say something! "M'sorry." Lita finally managed to mumble out, blue's blinking up at him like a gentle doe frightened stiff.

Severus hadn’t expected to be bumped into- he thought he’d be alright in his usual spot, safe from the rest of the student population. For him, it was all about getting away from the rest of the herd, simply because he wasn’t that keen on getting picked on. Such a normalcy for him, true, but that didn’t mean he enjoyed it, or encouraged it, either. All he wanted was to be left alone so he could brood in peace. Was that too much to ask? Apparently so, as he hadn’t been alone to his thoughts for more than five minutes before getting interrupted. Naturally, his initial reaction was to assume it was someone there to play some kind of prank on him, the Slytherin tensing quickly as his hand shot for his pocket. There, his wand was waiting for him, always ready to protect him when stupid Gryffindors wanted to try and play. If he had to send someone across the campus to make a point, well, so be it.
As long as he was left alone.
However, he soon realized that his want for battle had been a bit premature- it wasn’t a Gryffindor who had come to make his life a living hell. Instead, it was someone he recognized from his own house. A quiet, mousey type who really didn’t have much of a name for herself. All he knew about her was that she was not a threat, and that everyone seemed to think she didn’t know how to speak. A fair thought, really, as he couldn’t remember a time he had seen her talking to anyone. Even in class, it seemed like she never had much to say. Some of the Slytherins in his year said that she was just too stupid to know how to speak, and that she was more of the house’s pet than an actual member. However, Severus didn’t subscribe to that. She didn’t seem like a bad person, even if she was quiet. Sure, it was probably annoying having to speak to her and he wasn’t that big on annoying things, but there were worse people out there than a mute. A mute who didn’t seem to be much of a mute at all, as it turned out. Tilting his head, he watched her, shocked to hear her say something. Her voice… it was very gentle. Very unlike someone in Slytherin.
He responded with one more fitting for his house- a gruff, angry-sounding tone that, if not for all the irritation, might have sounded almost hauntingly melodic.
“It’s alright,” he huffed, “I suppose getting my thoughts interrupted isn’t the worst thing that could happen to me- but why are you all the way over here? This is kind of my area.” He frowned, watching the timid- seeming girl with the usual look of vexation. It was nothing against her- he treated everyone coldly. It was just the best way he knew how to keep himself from getting attached to anyone. Been there, tried that. Things hadn’t exactly worked out the way he had wanted them to. Alas, his relationship with Lily- he knew it was never going to be the same. While he wasn’t willing to give up on her, not just yet, he knew she would probably never see him as a friend. Not in the way she had.
So he wasn’t going to let anyone else in, if they were just going to bow out the first time he messed up. Considering how prone he was to making mistakes, that seemed like an extremely bad idea. Not to mention a great way to have his heart aching all the damn time.
“I didn’t think you knew how to talk,” he commented after a moment, crossing his arms over his chest as his black eyes shifted away from her, “that’s what everyone says about you, anyway: that you don’t know how to speak.”

one more day down these stairs, his room is cold now and it hurts like hell. he holds tight, he stares. it’s almost over and it’s running through his head. they don’t know me, they don’t know more than i show.
-------------------- It didn't surprise Lita too much - the second long expression of shock on Severus' face when she spoke. She had almost made one of her professors faint one day when she was asked to recite the definition of a specific spell - whether Lita had been just bolder that day, or there weren't many people around, she had done it (quietly, but still), and the woman had staggered a bit in awe. Sky blues glanced down where his hand had gone, his pocket, and then fixated themselves on his handsome face once more as he finally spoke. It was gruff and rugged, though with a melodic undertone that was indeed rather haunting should one really listen close enough. It was a good kind of haunting though - like the kind of eerie sound of a gentle breeze past your ear. It made your neck hair stand at attention, and your flesh erupt with goose pimples, but it filled you with a strange sort of enlightenment. The huff hadn't gone un-noticed, and before she could really stop herself, the old sarcastic Lita kicked in instinctively. The girl quirked a brow, a question mark on her features.
His frown only pushed her further, and although she blushed while doing so, the Slytherin girl tucked a lock of blonde behind her ear and then began to glance about. Booted feet kicked at the dirt as she flicked her blue's about the ground, the tree trunk... and then she began to circle him slowly - no looking at him, but looking around the ground. "Funny." she mumbled softly, eyes twitching as if she were searching for something. Lita finally moved to stand before Severus again, a smirk tugging at her lips, however she hardly smiled... only blushed and stared in awe back up at him. "I don't see 'Property of Severus Snape' anywhere in this area." What was it that had Lita speaking? The girl always assumed she would simply freeze up like deer in headlights when it came to her first proper meeting of the boy she gawked over, but the nervousness that flipped her stomach and made her want to vomit only seemed to drive her more brash, bold, and sarcastic side. Perhaps it was the fact she wanted to impress him... hmmn.
Maybe when the adrenaline wore off, she'd go quiet again. It was most likely, at any rate.
"I'm here because-" Because, what? She couldn't go telling him that she was ready to pound the poop out of some guy for saying snide remarks about him. Snape would just think she's full of it, and then be on his way. "Because I needed a break." Rolling her shoulders in a small shrug, Lita kicked at the dirt again, blue's staring at her feet before she lifted her eyebrows at his next set of words. Chin lifted, and the girl furrowed her brow, fists gripping and then ungripped before she tucked her hands behind her back. His crossed arms and coal eyes that avoided direct contact with her had her scoffing, and the girl found herself matching Severus' stance. "Is that what you thought?" she asked softly, her voice wavering slightly, however she was a good enough actress to know how to mask her feelings being hurt. "That I was too stupid to know how to talk?" Another quiet scoff, and Lita turned her face to stare out at the water with a hardened expression. "You, above most people, should know not to give into rumors." It was most definitely the Slytherin in her making her kinda bitchy - but her fight or flight was kicking in again... and this time, it was fight.

My my. Not only could she talk, but he was snarky, too. He was a little shocked that such a quiet thing was capable of being sarcastic- she had looked pretty innocent. But then, she was in Slytherin. Sometimes he thought it was some kind of unwritten rule that the people in his house all know how to treat someone else like dirt at the drop of a hat. Maybe she was more like the rest of them than he had given her credit for- it was hard to know what someone was like when they didn’t say anything, and the only rumors flying about were about how stupid she was. Rumors- how he loathed them. But he wasn’t above pointing them out when need be. This time, however, he couldn’t tell if the news was new to her or not- had she known about the rumors? He was always so aware of what people said about him that it seemed unlikely such noise could go unnoticed by anyone else in the same position. Surely she had known about what the others were whispering, and he wasn’t bringing the hammer down on her head, so to speak.
Feeling a little awkward, like he may have been a bit too rude to someone who didn’t deserve it, Severus shifted from one foot to the other, letting her ask her questions. His answer would have to be a carefully picked one, lest he come off as more of a jerk. Or he could, you know, just be blunt about things as usual.
The latter.
“Don’t be silly,” Severus replied quickly, “I’m not interested in rumors, but I knew for a fact that you don’t talk… ever. I’ve seen you around campus, and in the common room. You’re always silent, and not just in the usual ‘I don’t really like you, so I’m going to ignore you’ kind of way. It’s not hard to see why they would all think you’re a mute or something.” He moved to stand beside her, watching the water with a look of indifference. For him, the lake was one big death-trap he didn’t want anything to do with. Deep water scared the crap out of him, and he swam as well as a rock. Really, he didn’t know why he had picked a spot so close to something he was terrified of. Maybe being nearby, yet safe, gave him some kind of pseudo power over his fear.
Whatever worked.
“I’m not like the others, though,” he added after a moment, “I figure you’re more shy than stupid. Or maybe you just don’t like any of us. Whatever the case, you wouldn’t be allowed at this school if you were that inept. Hard to learn magic without words.” He shrugged his shoulders, dismissing the whole things rather easily. For him, secrets were common. Whatever hers were for making her the way she was, he imagined they were important in her own mind. He didn’t need to know what they were to appreciate that. Wasn’t like he was going to spill all his dark secrets just so someone understood him, so why should she?
A silly notion, really.
He sighed, his dark eyes still on the water.
“If you’re looking for a break, I guess you’ve come to the right place. Aside from me, no one really comes around this way. I can leave if you’d like.” He imagined she was not the kind of company she would want while trying to get away from it all. Some annoying little asshole who didn’t really know how to deal with his own problems.

one more day down these stairs, his room is cold now and it hurts like hell. he holds tight, he stares. it’s almost over and it’s running through his head. they don’t know me, they don’t know more than i show.
-------------------- Lita couldn't help but let her lips twitch to the shocked air he held with her sarcasm. Was she that strange? To be viewed as a mute and then shock the hell out of someone the moment she opens her mouth? Perhaps it was better to stay quiet, to stay relatively "normal". When he shifted awkwardly, Lita finally did let a small smile escape and snake along her features... however it was more in nerves than it was anything else. Would he leave now? She had been a little blunt - sarcastic and snarky. It wasn't how she had intended to treat the boy she fell all gooey for... however, it was their first proper meeting, and she had only ever been in his presence during classes. Lita had never spoken directly to Severus, nor had he spoken to her. This was a first - and first times were normally very awkward and very one-sided. This meeting was as much a shock to the blonde as it was to Snape, she figured. When the boy spoke up again, quickly, Lita quirked a brow and leaned more comfortably into herself - hip jutting out in the typical stance for a powerful woman. All she needed to do was place a hand on that jutting hip, and she'd look as intimidating as a hundred pound girl could ever look!
Wait a moment... he's seen her around? Did that mean he actually knew she existed before now, without the rumors? Or did the rumors fuel his curiosity of seeing her around the school?
Hmn.
Either way, sky blue's brightened and she reverted slightly to her subtle fawning and blushy composure. As her lips parted to speak, Severus moved to stand next to her, and Lita sucked in a sharp breath. He was so close and yet still so far away. Blue's flicked to the side to study him, though she didn't turn her face. Releasing her breath slowly, Lita allowed herself to drown in her silence, listening with half an ear as Severus spoke to her, though didn't look at her - instead he peered at the water. The same water she had previously been gazing at; and now her eyes were fixated on something much more beautiful. While he was distracted, speaking and water-gazing, Lita let her blue's trail along his tall figure. An extra few seconds were taken, just to take in every little shadow of his features, ever little wrinkle in his clothing, and every little movement his muscles made involuntarily. Swallowing hard, the girl forced herself to rip her eyes from him, to look at the lake once more until his last words finally registered.
"No!"
Lita turned herself slightly, nearly reaching out to grasp his arm should he have turned to leave. The only movement she made, however, was a twitch in her fingers. Blinking up at him, a clear of her throat was offered before she gave as casual a shrug as she could muster. "I mean, you don't have to go." Please, don't go. The youth ran a hand through her blonde strands, her breath hitching as she struggled to keep her cool. This was like Heaven right now. Even if they were just having small talk, Lita could have died happy right this second. Severus was standing next to her. Talking to her. Looking at her, and... well, she couldn't be sure if he was enjoying her company or not, but the Slytherin girl certainly was enjoying his! Biting her lip nervously, Lita hesitantly brought her eyes to stare at the water again, forcing herself to avoid eye contact - she'd have probably melted had she connected with his inky black ones anyway. "This is your area, after all." Small smirk, and Lita again offered a shrug. Thinking back to his previous statements, Lita finally allowed herself to grow hesitant and reserved, her lack of social skills making her alternate between happy, sad, and angered facial expressions before she finally settled on a mood.
Indifferent and almost loving.
"You're right, y'know." she offered slowly, finding herself turning and even stepping slightly closer to him; whether she knew it or not. Blue's turned to search his face, a small smile touching her gentle features. "You're not like the others, Severus. You're special." Half shrug. "Unique." Lita let her eyes linger a moment longer before awkwardly shifting in spot and clearing her throat. "As for being mute... One could say I am." Cue nervous laugh here. "I choose not to speak to people... not because I don't like them, but... I don't feel I should waste my words on someone who isn't worth my time." Hmmn. "Understand?"
Did it even make sense?

Severus was a little surprised when she yelped out a no- she looked like she really didn’t want him to go anywhere. Now that was the kind of thing that could make him a little suspicious. Did she want him around because she had something planned? The best way to get out of the rumor mill was to prank someone else who happened to be in a similar boat. She could make a good name for herself getting one up on Severus Snape, resident punching bag. Was that her angle? Did she want to play some kind of a trick on him, and was keeping him there to make sure the whole plan came to pass without trouble? Severus couldn’t say for sure, but he really didn’t want to find out. It made him more eager to get the hell out of there while he had the chance.
Did that make him a coward, or just paranoid?
Frowning, he watched her, trying to see if she had any tells in her eyes. Beyond the eager look, that had faded quickly, he couldn’t see any kind of maliciousness in her expression. It was soft- maybe a little tense, but not in a suspicious way. She just seemed more nervous than anything else.
The idea that she simply wanted his company was so foreign to him that it didn’t even come up in his mind, the boy completely baffled by her. She spoke again, and he decided to put the matter behind him for the time being. Maybe it was a trap, but there was an equal chance that it wasn’t. Anyway, he probably still had a little time to get the hell out of there if something happened.
“Even if there’s no sign?” He teased lightly, “I guess I could stick around- I don’t really have anywhere else to go.” He was just looking for some peace, and there were few other places that could offer that. She wasn’t too much of a threat, yet, so it was probably still the best place for him to be to get away from it all. The library was always filled with students. It didn’t matter how quiet they were, it was busy. Severus didn’t like busy. The common room was the same, only without the need to be quiet. True, they were all Slytherins, but he could hardly focus on his thoughts with students coming in and out all the time. This tree was his best bet.
The only place he could go. It was almost a crime to have to share it. Anyone else, and he would have told them to fuck off. However, with her, it didn’t seem like so much of a sin. For the time being, he would share his oasis. See how things went.
First sign she meant trouble, though, and he was going to boot her cute little butt out of there.
Severus watched her as she took a step closer, feeling his body tense instinctively. Ugh, closeness- he wasn’t good at it. Was she going to smack him? What had he done? No, she was telling him he was special, to which he offered a faint grunt. “Special ed, maybe.” He didn’t even know if she would get the reference- he tended to slip into muggle references without knowing it. A bad thing to do when he was trying to pretend he was from a pureblood family. Rubbing his neck, he moved back to his tree, motioning for her to follow as he sat himself down under the branches.
“I understand,” he replied easily enough, “I probably wouldn’t want to talk to a lot of these idiots, either. However, I guess I have to- I don’t think they would buy me suddenly becoming mute when they come to give me a hard time.”

one more day down these stairs, his room is cold now and it hurts like hell. he holds tight, he stares. it’s almost over and it’s running through his head. they don’t know me, they don’t know more than i show.
-------------------- His tensing up made her almost step back again, however she lingered where she was and swallowed hard, chancing a smile up at him. Was he always so paranoid? It made sense, honestly... he was always so picked on, and set up for pranks that it really didn't surprise her that he was on edge, even around her. Severus wasn't aware of her true feelings for him, so one could automatically assume that he didn't trust her. Which was most likely true. Brows lifted as she watched him, their lingering eye contact making it difficult for her to look away, or do anything but force herself to stay calm and breathe.
His teasing made her sigh lightly, and she blinked up at him quietly for a moment before letting a nervous little giggle escape - ew, girly giggles. Even Lita didn't like the idea of her being girly, but Severus seemed to have a way with her, and revert her to a giggling nancy girly girl. "Even without a sign." she assured. When he announced he was going to stay, she nodded quickly, her doe eyes blinking up at him nervously, though her nervous smile continued to linger on her features. When his body tensed again and he grunted, the girl tilted her head almost innocently, brow creasing when he finally spoke up once more. Special Ed? That was a muggle class, clearly - she remembered her step-father often told her she should be in a Special Education school.
A light laugh took Lita, before she shook her head and threw him a sarcastic expression. "Nooo," she drawled, smirking with new found interest. Lita didn't know, like everyone else, that he was a half-blood... not that it would have concerned her, mind you, being muggle born and all. "I don't mean special with a capitol 'R'." Small huff escaped her, and the girl nearly crossed her arms. "I mean, special as in... well, different. But not in a bad way." Lita quirked her brow, almost nudging him with her arm, but she thought better of it. "You're your own person, and it's a shame everyone else has their heads so far up their asses that they can't see that." Casual shrug, and her cheeks heated up in a pink blush when he motioned for her to follow him to the tree.
When Severus sat himself beneath the branches, Lita kicked at the dirt awkwardly. For someone who got picked on a lot and got pranked a bunch, the girl wondered if he knew sitting was just an open invitation for it - sitting comfortably was a vulnerability. Kinda. If he did know this tidbit of information... then what Lita was about to do should have been proof enough he could relax around her. Smiling delicately, Lita let herself drop slowly next to him, back leaning against the tree and legs crossing over one another comfortably. There. Now she was vulnerable too.
When he spoke again, Lita smirked, and she rolled her shoulders in a small shrug. "Not being social has allowed me to get ahead in my classes... stay focused, and even do some extra studying." She wasn't a genius... but she was intelligent, and she was pretty skilled in her knowledge of various spells and potions. Not near as good as Severus in Potions, but she was pretty good. "It's not always a bad thing, sticking to yourself... do it long enough, and you become invisible." Like she had, y'know... other than the fact the students here would find anything to bully someone about, and being silent and reserved was just the right thing to bug Lita about.

Severus watched as she moved to sit beside him. No pulling her wand out and blasting him, no one else leaping out from behind the trees to throw him into the lake. She was just sitting beside him, no trouble involved. Maybe he shouldn’t have been so quick to think she’d attack him. Not only did she look like a kitten, but she was in his house. It was rare that fellow Slytherins would pull a prank on him. Even if they didn’t like him, they didn’t want to look like the Gryffindors and follow their little tactics. Severus was pleased that she seemed to be a good person- he didn’t mind sitting beside her.
Excluding the way his stomach was suddenly in knots. Sitting next to females, regardless of how well he knew them, made him really uncomfortable. She was cute, and he was… not. Whenever he found himself too close to someone who was pretty, he had to think it was a beauty and the beast kind of situation, only without all the love. He was just the gross guy she was far too near to.
But he had offered for her to sit, so he needed to suck it up and deal with the consequences. No one was around to tease the silly scenario, anyway.
Watching the girl, he tilted his head slightly to one side, listening as she spoke about being invisible. Maybe that would have been the way to go- not causing trouble. Just fading into the background. But it wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted respect, and to be seen as more than just the gum on someone’s shoe. For that, he couldn’t sit in the back and be quiet. He needed his peers to know of his talents, and he needed to make sure he made a new for himself before he got out of school. Severus Snape was not going to be no body forever, he had vowed that a long time ago. He would be better than the marauders, better than his father, and better than anyone else who stood against him. How he was going to accomplish all that, he didn’t know, but he would have to deal with those bridges when he got to them. In the meantime, he would just have to try what he could, when he could.
“Is that all you want?” he asked after a moment, “to be invisible? I mean, I get that being teased sucks, and I certainly hate it, but I think I would hate being invisible even more… at least I have the good with the bad, even if the good seems really small sometimes. I don’t know. If that makes you happy, I don’t mean to knock it, I just… don’t think I could go that road. Maybe you’re just a nicer person than I am, huh?” He chuckled lightly. He wasn’t afraid to kick up confrontation if he needed to, even if it would have been easier to just walk away.
He would stand his ground, and get his ass kicked for it.
Sighing softly, he watched the water ahead of them, wondering how it must feel to stay out of trouble for a change. Something he might like to try, even if he had no intention of being a wallflower. Sometimes, NOT ending up in the hospital wing was a good thing, wasn’t it?
“So, you’re pretty good with classes, huh?” He asked after a moment, “I can’t say I’m not the same. Oh… my name’s Severus, by the way. I guess we don’t really need to introduce ourselves, living in the same house, but it seems… rude… not to.”

one more day down these stairs, his room is cold now and it hurts like hell. he holds tight, he stares. it’s almost over and it’s running through his head. they don’t know me, they don’t know more than i show.
-------------------- Leaning more comfortably against the tree, Lita let her eyes wash over him for a moment to drink in his figure, before she settled for staring at some strands of grass near his hand. The tilt of his head to her explanation hadn't gone un-noticed, and the girl found it adorable... like a puppy dog listening to his master and questioning sweetly their motives. The expression he gave, however, was one of understanding, yet there was a twinge of "what the hell" in there as well. It was obvious that Severus wasn't a "hide and let it blow over" kinda guy. He wanted to stand up for himself, and honestly, all the power to him! Lita wished she was that brave. When he spoke finally, sky blue's trained on his handsome features, and the girl rolled her shoulders in a small shrug. The sound of his chuckle was almost melodic to her ears, and she forced back the urge to sigh and swoon.
"It's not... exactly what I want." she shrugged awkwardly. "I want what everyone else wants. Power. Respect." Grabbing for some pebbles, the girl tossed them at the lake, not particularly caring if they plopped in the water or not... it was just a simple distraction from the haunting images in her head... however, if they were being honest here? "I simply learned at a young age that it's easier to keep quiet, less you get beaten into silence, or submission." Motioning with her hand towards the school, she was talking about the bullies... but in her own mind, she was talking about her step-father. About how he beat her into silence. About how she learned it was easier to just do as you were told and stay quiet around him. A small chuckle escaped her before she rubbed the back of her neck gently. "I wouldn't say I'm nicer than you... just not about ready to spend half my school year in the hospital wing." A light tap of her elbow to his upper arm in a playful gesture, and she smirked.
When he sighed and turned to look out at the water, Lita took that time to search his features for... well, anything. Any sign of any emotion other than irritation, anger, and... well, sadness. He always had such a hardened expression on his face, and in the way he held himself. Lita knew the feeling all too well - they just masked it and showed it differently. Uncrossing her legs, almost wishing she hadn't worn shorts that day and suddenly feeling very self-conscious, the girl brought her knees to her chest and hugged her legs close to her, hoping her sweater sleeved arms could cover her exposed fair skin as best it could while she stared at the boy beside her. She would attempt shuffling closer... yet the butterflies in her stomach almost made her feel like puking, so she decided against anything that might provoke such an action. Lita nearly startled as he spoke, and she swiftly tore her gaze from him to stare at the emerald grass again between them.
The hint of a smirk touched her lips, and she shrugged.
"I'm not bad at my classes... though I could use a little help in Potions." No, she couldn't use the help in Potions. Potions was probably her second best class next to Care of Magical Creatures... but if there was some sort of way she could get closer or spend more time with the dark boy, then this seemed as good an excuse as any. "You're really good at Potions... aren't you? Maybe, you could help me out a bit...?" Cue clear of throat here, and then a quirk of her brow in amusement. Had he just introduced himself? Oh, Lita knew who he was. Had known who he was since first year, and then wanted to know more in second... but now was as good a time as any to get well acquainted. "Spades. Lita Spades." she smiled, blushing once more. Gods, if she knew she'd be so pansy and girly, then she'd have run off the moment she bumped into Severus. He must have thought she was an idiotic, moronic... stupid girl!

“I know that lesson,” Severus replied, picking idly at the grass around his feet, “but I won’t be shut down just because some brute wants to try physical force. I’m not a horse- I won’t be broken.” It seemed everyone and their dog-walker wanted to beat the tar out of him, and he really didn’t know why that was. Surely he wasn’t just some target, always there to be kicked around. He had to think that there was something about him- something they wanted to keep down. Maybe he was talented and special, as his mother had thought, and they all feared it. Did it mean that he was just supposed to let his talents fall into shadow because some jerks liked to kick him around?
No way.
“I think I would spend the whole year in the hospital wing if it meant standing up for myself. I guess it probably doesn’t look like I’m accomplishing much, since I’m still the butt of everyone’s jokes… but I do feel like I at least have my pride, sometimes. Gotta be worth something, right?” Or maybe he was just too stubborn. Lily had always said he had that fault about him, but oh well. There wasn’t much need to focus on Lily these days- he knew he had already lost her. Eventually, he would have to reflect on what really had been the cause of that. If it had really been his fault in the first place. Maybe the whole thing had been destiny- maybe he wasn’t meant to be with her. But if not her, then who was his special someone? He hadn’t really spoken to a lot of other girls. True, it didn’t have to happen while he was in school, but he did want to find his other half at some point. God forbid he end up living alone. If his father could do it, he could do it. He just… needed to find his love.
His eyes drifted to Lita, the dots not connecting, and he offered her a faint smile. Talking about classes seemed better than dodging around memories neither seemed that interested in being honest about. It was clear to him that she had her own troubles and past experiences to concern herself with, and he had his own to match. Maybe they needed a lighter topic between them, just so they weren’t wallowing in their own miseries.
An easy thing for him to do, normally. Being chipper was the hard part.
“I am,” he replied when she asked him if he was good at potions, “you’re not very good? I never seem to see you struggling during class,” he hummed thoughtfully, always one to take note of who was and wasn’t doing well in his favorite subject. He didn’t know the skill-level of every student, but he knew the ones he could mock for their lack of talent. Maybe she was somewhere in the middle- not horrible, but perhaps not where she wanted to be, either.
“Well, Lita Spades,” Severus replied lightly, “I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to lend a hand to a fellow Slytherin- I would be happy to give you an assist whenever you need it. Just let me know if a potion assignment is confusing you.” He didn’t know if he would be any good at teaching, but he would give it a shot. Normally he was an asshole to people who needed help, but for her… he would have to try a different tactic. For whatever reason, he didn’t want to be rude to her, even if she wasn’t great at the subject he loved. Maybe because he felt connected to her? They seemed to have a lot in common, which was rare for him.
It made him feel a little uncomfortable. Like things were fluttering in his stomach. Better ignore it- it might just be gas.

one more day down these stairs, his room is cold now and it hurts like hell. he holds tight, he stares. it’s almost over and it’s running through his head. they don’t know me, they don’t know more than i show.
-------------------- Watching him curiously, the girl idly picked at some grass as well, listening to him quietly before offering a tiny smile. He wasn't a horse? Oh, but he was a stallion, wasn't he? Lita couldn't help but giggle at her inner monologue, lifting a hand to cover her mouth before trying to mask the slip up with a small nod. "Mmn, I don't think anyone could break you, anyway, Severus." she smirked, finding herself beginning to relax a little more in his presence. It was... terrifying still to say the least. Her stomach flipped and knotted, and her chest felt constricted with embarrasment; the youth just wanted to bolt from the situation, and hide her nose in her journal... writing about how much she was gooey-eyed over Severus Snape instead of thinking about it over, and over, and over again while he sat right next to her!
Sky blue's turned to fixate on the tall boys features, and she felt herself melt physically. He was just... so beautiful to look at. Lita couldn't be bothered to figure out why no other girl had snatched him up already - he was handsome. Tall, dark, and mysterious - that's what girls liked after all, wasn't it? Sure, he could learn a think or two about managing his gorgeous inky locks of hair, but that wasn't anything to be wary of. He was a typical boy - a typical boy, with a typical "boy" attitude, and a typical boy look to him. Watching his lips move as he spoke, the girl chewed her own bottom lip thoughtfully - now that they were speaking... did this mean they would speak more in the future? Become friends, perhaps? Wishful thinking had Lita asking if they would ever be more... and yet her negative upbringing bashed all those thoughts away swiftly, and the blonde had to catch herself before she began frowning... even if the expression would have been appropriate for this current conversation.
"I don't feel like wasting my steps to the hospital wing every day to check up on ya... so could you maybe, I dunno... try not to get yourself into so much trouble?" Weak smile announced she was simply joking around with him, however the truth of it was obvious. She didn't want to see him hurt all the time, however... "However, it does make sense. I understand... but you know, you're worth more than you think." And you're worth more to some people than you think...
When his eyes trained on her, Lita found herself drifting to make eye contact, her sky blue's blinking up into his own velvet black ones. His faint smile had the girl lifting her brows, and she offered her own sweet smile - the silence between them in that moment oddly comforting and yet at the same time, very awkard and unsettling. She would have sighed in admiration if it weren't for his speaking up again. Blinking as if she just realized where she was, the girl felt her face heating up in a blush... but she just couldn't tear her eyes away. His words caught her slightly off guard, and before she could stop the word vomit from spilling out, the girl piped up. "Oh, I'm... well, it's just that... I mean the ones we've been doing lately have been giving me some trouble, uhm." Well, damn. This just didn't go over as well as she'd assumed it would. Gazing back up at him, Lita hadn't realized she was leaning towards him ever so slowly until he spoke her name.
Severus Snape said her name! And did it ever sound lovely rolling off his tongue!
Clearing her throat and leaning back again, away from his personal space, Lita picked at the grass and hugged her knees more tightly, finally growing a little uncomfortable with the position. Letting her legs stretch out again, the blonde ran a hand through her hair before leaning back on her palms - one hand dangerously close to touching Severus'. Oh, she knew it was there - she blushed at the thought of moving it close enough to touch - but she couldn't shuffle and move now. He'd notice, and then it'd just get awkward, and-- "Well, Severus Snape." she mimicked with a lop-sided smile. "This most recent assignment is giving me some troubles. Care to take some time out of your troublesome schedule one day soon to teach me?" Truth was... this current potion? Lita had no troubles with it at all. In fact, it was reall simple. But... anything to keep his attention. Right?

Severus smiled, though he was more surprised than anything else. She would visit him if he ended up in the hospital wing? That seemed a little bit surprising- he didn’t get a lot of visitors whenever he was hold up there. Most of his Slytherin buddies knew he was there a lot, and didn’t think it was really important to go and see him every time something went wrong. His stays there normally weren’t very long, too, making all the more of an apparent wasted effort. Severus didn’t really mind- it wasn’t like he was very good with company, anyway. Especially if they brought a gift. He hated thanking people and looking like a goon. It made him feel very insecure about himself and often produced an idiocy in him that could not be contained. All-in-all, he liked not getting visitors often. It was only when something really bad happened to him that they would show up, which was rare anyway. As much as the other students liked to tease him, they knew they would be out on their asses if they ever attempted to seriously injure him.
A small miracle.
“I guess I could try to keep away from there,” he replied, nodding thoughtfully, “though I don’t know if it’s going to end up being possible. A lot of the time, I’m not really the one in control of the situation that leads me to there.” He didn’t mind, though. Maybe he’d cut back on his dangerous experiments, or maybe he wouldn’t fiddle with potions as recklessly as he sometimes did. Or maybe he wouldn’t change anything and the promise was just something made in fun- they seemed to be able to joke around with one another, which he really liked. In a ‘oh my god, I’m totally going to muck this up’ kind of way, of course. It was only a matter of time before she got annoyed with his attitude or thought he was turning into some kind of evil villain. Familiar stories, and, unfortunately, history liked to repeat itself.
She was very nice to him right at that moment, encouraging him and saying he was worth more than he thought, but how long would it last? With his ability to screw up every relationship he made with someone else, he couldn’t see anything too far ahead of them. Probably why he wasn’t paying attention to just how relaxed he found himself feeling around her- how unnaturally at ease right off the bat.
Signs he couldn’t read.
“The recent one? Really?” He asked, furrowing his brows. Naturally, he had to keep himself from making any kind of comment, as he felt the potion was one of the easier ones they had done that year. How could she need help with that one? Was she really that bad at potions? Of course he couldn’t say that, as it would lead right down that path of ruining friendships he was desperately trying to avoid.
Give it a day, at least, before showing her how much of an asshole you are.
“Alright,” he said after a moment, “what about tomorrow? We could meet in the dungeons after dinner- I’d be happy to show you what you might be doing wrong. I don’t think it’ll take to long. If you’re free, I mean. I know it’s short notice, but I think we’ll be moving on from that potion shortly.” He smiled, completely oblivious to the full scope of what he was asking from this nice girl. A date? Who said anything about a date?
He got to his feet, waiting for her to respond before having to excuse himself from their little spot together- he did have other work he needed to get to, mostly charms assignments he had been putting off as long as possible. Damn class.
“I’ll see you soon,” he offered lightly, giving her a small, non-substantial wave before turning and heading back towards the castle.
