It was eleven o’clock on a Saturday morning and most students (especially) the older ones were still in bed. Wrapped up in their sheets away in the land of nod or sitting in the common room nursing hangovers and reluctantly nibbling toast. James however was on the Quidditch pitch. The season wasn’t anywhere near starting yet, it was only the first week of term after all but the Gryffindor liked to get ahead of the game. He took the magical sport very seriously and coupled with the fact that he was extremely competitive he couldn’t waste any time if he wanted Gryffindor to retain the Quidditch cup this year. In order to be able to brag to anyone who would or wouldn’t listen about how amazing his skills on a broomstick were then he needed to put in the effort and that meant early Saturday mornings. He wasn’t too bothered really; the thought of getting out on his broomstick was enough to drag him out of his bed.
He’d flown around taking shots and even having a few quick goes at catching the snitch for almost three hours before he decided he’d better pack up and head back to the castle for a shower before lunch. Yes, a shower was definitely on the cards. A torrential rainstorm had happened overnight and the grounds were soggy with mud which was splattered up and down James’ jeans and even splashed on his t-shirt. He locked the balls away in the broom shed and wiped his sweaty forehead with the back of his hand. He picked up his jumper that he’d hooked on a post after getting too hot wearing it whilst flying and threw it over his shoulder. Resting his broomstick on the same shoulder he traipsed from the Quidditch pitch and towards the castle. The rain had done its job of clearing away and leaving the grounds bathed in cool autumn sunlight. A few students that actually got up before lunch at the weekends were making their away outside to enjoy the sunshine while it lasted. It was Scotland so it probably wouldn’t stick around for long.
James reached the courtyard and by this point he was gasping for a drink. He made his way over to the water fountain and took large gulps of the cool, refreshing water. He made an ”Aah” sound and lifted his shirt up to wipe his mouth. Whilst taking his drink however, his broomstick had slipped from his shoulder. He grabbed it quickly and swung around without looking if anyone was nearby and he felt it make contact with another human being. He screwed his face up in apology, turning on the spot to see who his victim was.

There was little noise in the library that morning. Only a few people were scattered throughout the tables. They were doing homework from the night before, trying to get caught up or get ahead of things. Most of the Hogwarts population were either in bed or in their common room. In a table in the back sat a sixteen year old Gryffindor girl. Her thick red hair was left hanging down. It reached a couple of inches below her waist. A few strands fell in her emerald green eyes and she pushed them away. A thoughtful look sparkled as the tip of her quill hovered above the piece of paper. Lily Evans tried to remember what Professor Binns had talked about the day before in class. At last she shook her head and put the quill down. She turned around in her seat and opened up her bag, taking out her History of Magic book. The sixth year bit down on the inside of her cheeks. She tore her eyes away from her work and scanned the library. Many students in their right minds would be sleeping in late since it was a Saturday. Either sleeping in late or recovering from partying the night before but not Lily. Lily was different. She never did approve of the whole party scene. She was more of a book warm type of person. She wanted to graduate at the top of her class. Lily wanted to get ready for the next year ahead.
She was a perfect and her goal was to get Head Girl. All of the teachers loved her. She was popular with the students. Especially with a group of rowdy boys known as the infamous Marauders. A scowl made its way across her lips at the mere thought of them. They had been enemies ever since their first meeting on the train ride to Hogwarts. Lily wanted nothing to do with them when they had started bullying Severus. A flash of sadness went through her eyes as she thought of her ex friend. Everything had changed last year when he had called her a Mudblood in front of everyone. She had defended him for years against her other friends. They had no idea what she saw in him. Now she wondered what he was doing and if he was doing well. The corners of her lips twitched upwards in a small, sad smile. Old habits die hard, she thought as she finished her essay. Lily closed her book with a sigh of relief and she started to pack away her things. She stood and walked out of the library. Now what to do, she mused silently to herself as she looked around. Lily had some time to herself until an idea found its way inside her.
Granted it was an insane idea but an idea nonetheless. She made her way out to the castle grounds. Lily had never been a fan of Quidditch. She never liked the thought of flying on a broomstick. That was more of Potter’s fantasy than hers. James Potter. The mere mention of his name made her roll her eyes. He had taken a liking to asking her out every chance he got. The most embarrassing one happened during dinner. The idiot had gotten down on one knee in front of her. She had given him her best glare before saying no. He never learns, she thought as she walked across the court yard. He would never give up. He’s an annoying, arrogant….WHAM! A broomstick had connected with her. Lily rubbed her face angrily. “What the hell?” she demanded fiercely. She recognized that jet black hair anywhere. “POTTER! I’LL MAKE YOU PAY!” Her eyes burned with anger and pure hatred as she waited for him to speak.

Of all the people he had to whack with his broomstick, it had to be Lily Evans. Just saying her name in his head made his heart flutter. A smile automatically broke out onto his face. Whenever he saw her, even when her eyes were alight with danger as they were now, he couldn’t help but smile. She just had this . . . thing. He didn’t know exactly what it was about her. There was no one thing. It was everything. His smile faded quickly however because that would just anger her more. And although he found angry Lily really quite attractive, it didn’t make him more appealing to her if he was the reason she was angry. ”Evans!” He sounded surprised because he wasn’t used to her finding him. She tried to avoid him at all costs which was generally quite hard because James made a habit of following her around.
He took in her appearance and his stomach did that funny little back flip as if it were trying to escape. She said she didn’t want him, James didn’t believe that. Firstly, how could anyone not want him? He was sweet, charming, charismatic and a lot more good looking than the only other guy she had ever seemed interested in, Snivellus Snape. Looking at her and how perfect she looked made him realise just how horrible he looked. Covered in mud and grass and sweat soaked into his back. Why, Merlin, Why? Someone up there hated him for sure. Why else would Lily Evans be outside on a Saturday morning when he looked (and probably smelled) terrible. Shouldn’t she be in the library or something? But there was no use worrying about it, might as well make the best out of a bad situation. Besides he couldn’t look at her angry face without smiling for very long. He had her attention and he was determined to keep it, however he looked.
He said in his best, ‘I’d like to see you try’ voice, ”You’re going to make me pay?” He chuckled lightly and raised his hand casually to his hair, ruffling it lightly at the back. ”Calm down Evans it was an accident.” He lowered his broomstick carefully, letting it hover serenely at his side and held his hands up as a sign of peace. A mischievous grin soon crept onto his face however. ”Or are you going to give me a detention and host it yourself? Me and you - a little alone time.” He gave her an exaggerated wink. ”We could call it a date.” Not a meeting between the two of them went by without James asking her out on a date. He even shouted out in the middle of class asking her out from time to time. He figured the best time to ask her was when she was least expecting it; catch her off guard. Though it had been five whole years now, she knew it was coming. He could be pretty inventive about it though. You’d think she’d at least give him credit for that but nope. She gave him nothing. Except for a glare.

--------------------------------I think I'm falling in love with you My heart is beating faster than I want it to--------------------------------- Lily narrowed her eyes slightly at him as she detected a tone of surprised in his voice. She quickly bit down on her lower lip to stop herself from speaking her thoughts. It was true that she had ran into him, coming out from behind him. “Potter,” she commented coolly. “Next time hold on to that broomstick of yours and I will not give you a detention. As I should have.” Her words made her pause for a bit. Would she really give him detention or would she let him slid by. She had been a perfect for two years if you count last year. During that time she had docked house points and gave people detention but she never really used it unless she needed to. A lot of people were mad at her after that. But hey, it really wasn’t her fault that they ended up there in the first place. There was a weary smile that was making its way across her lips as she remembered something from her muggle primary school. A lot of the girls were jealous of her and had accused her of being the teacher’s pet. Whenever the teacher would leave a class for whatever reason they had put her in charge of keeping the peace in the classroom. That first day wasn’t that bad but it grew worse as the years continued on. Lily sometimes wondered if the teachers had depended on her to keep the rule breakers in line.
Whatever their motive it did not work. Lily would have always came home in tears because of one thing or another. Her sister had been really sweet back then. Petunia would always know the right thing to say to her. Not to mention to the people as well. The sixteen year old shook her head slightly to herself, pulling her out of her thoughts. Lily glanced down at James and the smile widen in spite of the situation at hand. “Rolled around in the mud Potter?” Her tone was oddly mild as she raised an eyebrow. It was perhaps the first time that she had looked at him like that. Without the trademark scowl that had been there a few minutes ago. Knowing James he would probably say something to put it back. At his next words her eyes narrowed ever so slightly. The scowl was back on her face again. “You know that I could to Potter.” Her tone was a bit harsh. Her hand itched to smack him up across the head. Damn him. Every time that they end up together he would end up ruffling his hair. Does he think that I thought it cute whenever he does that? She asked herself. She didn’t have the nerve to ask that question because she knew what his answer would be.
The sixteen year old could not help but to raise an eyebrow at the grin on his face. What is he thinking this time? She thought with a small frown. Lily scowled heavily at him. “In your dreams Potter. I would choose the giant squid over you. You’re still an arrogant bullying toe rag no matter what you do,” That was harsh and Lily knew it. “Maybe if you actually matured a bit I would think it over.” Was that a smile creeping up on her lips? And the twinkle in her eyes? Oh no, she thought. I’m supposed to hate him. We’re supposed to be enemies. Lily tried to keep herself from struggling with her feelings. What’s going to happen now? She asked herself frantically. The sixth year managed to keep her face straight without revealing what she was thinking. Tagged!? James <333 Words!? 611 Notes!? HA! To be quite honest, at first, James had rather enjoyed chasing her. Their bickering was quite interesting and he quite liked that she was able to stand up for herself and that she bent over backwards for no one. But it soon became apparent that she was more interested in spending time with that slime ball Severus Snape and as soon as James had realised that, he had made it his priority to make the Slytherin’s life hell. He was supposed to get Lily that was how it worked, Gryffindor boy, Gryffindor girl meet on train to Hogwarts, exchange a few quarrels, go on a date, and fall in love. There was nothing in the script about mangy Slytherins getting in the way. Honestly, he was just jealous of the other male because he was getting almost all of Lily’s attention and that was the only reason he paid special attention to Snape. But James had not failed to notice that since their return to Hogwarts, the pair of them hadn’t been seen together. It seemed that Lily had not forgiven Snape for calling her a mudblood. Good for her, James wouldn’t have forgiven him either. Maybe she’d finally see sense and realise that he was not worth it. Seriously, what did Snivelly ever have that James didn’t?
Now, James was getting to the point where Lily’s refusal to even give him a chance was seriously getting him down. ”Thank you.” He said, glad that she was being reasonable, even if she was saying it with her trademark cool voice. He blushed when she commented on his appearance. It was stupid really to feel embarrassed about it; he’d evidently, given the broomstick, come back from Quidditch practise, but always tried his best to impress her and so any comment from her that showed she wasn’t impressed dented him slightly. He bit his bottom lip, sucking it inwards. He had to get over himself; acting embarrassed was definitely not going to get him anywhere. He shrugged her comment off casually although he was certain she hadn’t missed the reddening of his cheeks.
”Seriously Evans, I don’t think the giant squid could do much for you.” He said in a serious voice as if she was actually considering the giant squid as a date partner. ”I’m not a bully!” He denied furiously. ”I hex people who deserve it.” His words were bitter; they both knew who and what they were talking about. His expression softened however at her next words. She had surprised him so far today, the odd smile that wasn’t gloating or smug and now an actual proposal of sorts. However, the idea of having to mature up he wasn’t too keen on, even if the incentive was a date with Lily Evans. ”What? My boyish attitude is charming and endearing, Evans. You don’t need to pretend you want someone mature just because you think it’ll make you look better. Let loose, have some fun.” His hand jumped to his hair again, running his hand through it.

--------------------------------I think I'm falling in love with you My heart is beating faster than I want it to--------------------------------- The red haired girl couldn’t help but to smile softly at him. It was the first meeting that had set the wrong impression of him. He had to realize that not everyone liked him. He seemed to be too spoiled and pampered at home. It sounded like the kids she used to know from the muggle primary school. She had often told him he was nothing but a bully and an arrogant bit of work. It was bad enough that he was the ring leader of the group of Marauders. Did he really have to pick on people that are/were less than worthy of his standards? The corners of her lips twitched downwards into a small frown as she remembered the events of last year. Shaking her head, she ran a hand through her hair. “You know Potter, I bet you were lucky at what happened last year,” Lily drawled. She was watching him closely, ever so closely. “It gave me the opportunity to see what you really are.” She would have jumped in the black lake before she ever admitted to him the other thought that had been crossing her mind. It had also given her the opportunity to see what the other person was like. The one who had called her a filthy Mudblood. She crossed her arms over her chest while keeping a close watch on James. He must never know.
Later that night Mary had told her that Snape had threatened to sleep outside of the common room if he didn’t get to speak to her. She had rolled her eyes before walking out to see what he wanted. He had kept on saying that he was sorry. Lily told him to save it. She was done making excuses for him. She couldn’t see what he was so fascinated into the Dark Arts for. As she got lost in her thoughts, the sixteen year old lost the hard look on her face. She looked…vulnerable. Lost. She shook her head again with a small scowl at herself. You know what you had to do. A small voice in the back of her head hissed. You had to call off the friendship for a reason before it gotten to a certain point. Lily bit down on the inside of her cheeks as she looked at James with a rather sheepish and worried look. It was a look that she had never used on him before. Well, in this conversation James really wasn’t bad company at all. She would have to catch him by himself. The thought alone had made her grin. That was before she had heard what he had to say and scowled. “At least the giant squid doesn’t show off to all of the girls. The squid doesn’t try to ruffle up his hair every bloody time I walk past.” There was a sharp note to her voice. “Maybe you need to realize that not every girl is charmed by your ways and it’s time to overlook them Potter.”
“Not everyone is going for a guy who likes to mess his hair up and walks around thinking he owns the castle,” There. The old Lily was back and she was more angry with him than ever. She narrowed her eyes at him ever so slightly. “Why do you think they deserved it before it happened?” Lily’s voice was soft and dangerously calm. James had to answer and answer right or else she would have exploded. “You don’t know what they faced at home. They probably-” Lily decided to stop right then and there. She was actually going to tell him about Snape’s home life! “It doesn’t matter Potter. You wouldn’t understand anyways.” The sixteen year old actually made a face at him. “Maybe some of it is Potter. You need to rethink.” Was she actually going to make him change? Merlin, he would do anything for her. The scowl was back on her face. “I don’t need to pretend anything Potter.” He needed to watch his choice of words carefully. She decided to ignore his comment about her having some fun. Watching his hand, Lily’s own hand itched to slap him across the head but she somehow restrained herself. [/blockquote] Tagged!? James <3333 Words!? 703 Notes!? ”Lucky!?” James yelped the word almost disbelievingly. Was she really making up excuses for the slimeball? As far as he could see, Lily had been just as disgusted and abhorred by the event as he had. How could she say he was lucky? ”I didn’t make the greaseball say anything. He said it of his own accord. That’s what he’s like.” James’ voice had started off incensed but it softened towards the end. He knew that Snape and Lily had gotten along very well and it must have hurt her incredibly to have heard him say that to him when she had only been trying to help. But inside, James had always known that Snivellus would let her down at some point. But this was Lily; he wasn’t going to rub that fact in her face even if she refused to believe it. Admittedly he had been showing off, had been a prat, had seen Lily wasn’t too far away and had wondered whether she would come over and whose side she would take. But he brushed over that part.
He could see it in the girl’s eyes now, she was remembering back to the experience. James’ shoulders slumped slightly. He felt bad now for bringing it up. Even if it had stopped her from hanging around with the greasy git, he still didn’t like seeing Lily upset. It hurt him and made him want to do whatever he could to fix it. Though he realised that that would mean having to get Snape and Lily to be friends again. But he doubted he could fix their friendship even if he wanted to. James had badgered asked Lily’s friends what had happened between the two of them after the incident and apparently she hadn’t forgiven him despite his apologies. James couldn’t say he wasn’t relieved. But he had never seen Lily like this before looking so . . . vulnerable with him. His lips parted slightly, his eyes creased with worry. He just wanted to hug her. Actually he wanted to kiss her, pull her close, stroke her hair and tell her that everything was going to be alright. He blinked rapidly, eclipsing the thoughts from his mind before he actually did something stupid.
And then, only mere moments later, his heart was sinking. How could one minute he feel like the two of them might be getting somewhere and then she just went and shot him down. His heart had been aching from seeing her hurt and now it was aching because she had hurt him. Every time she rebuffed him these days it was harder to smile and shove it away. Now it was beginning to make him feel hopeless but he wouldn’t ever give up. He wanted her too much. James wanted to make a sarcastic comment about the squid waving its tentacles at the girls that sat by the lake during the hotter months but he couldn’t open his mouth and do it. The thing was, it was utterly impossible to change his ways. James just acted that way; he had confidence, he had a bit of swagger, he didn’t do it intentionally, it was habitual and if he made an effort to change that he wouldn’t be James anymore. Maybe he could cut out the showing off though and he would try however hard it might be. And so with a sombre expression he let Lily rant at him and try and make excuses for the boy who had called her the most horrible word under the sun.
”I don’t believe you’re defending him!” He snapped back eventually. It was all he could say otherwise he’d have to admit the one thing he didn’t want to out loud. But he could feel that he was wandering into dangerous territory now and if he did say the wrong thing Lily could be out of his life for good. There were only so many times he could piss her off, surely? ”He always had that in him! You saw who he hung around with, Evans so don’t be so naive about it.” James couldn’t believe he was actually being angry with her but his heart had had enough and once he’d started, the words just kept on coming. ”Maybe I wouldn’t understand, but what I do understand is that he followed you around like a lost puppy just as much as I did.” He raised his hand, balling it into a fist and pointing his index finger in his emotion. ”And him calling you that word is proof that he doesn’t deserve you.” He clamped his mouth shut quickly thinking that maybe he had not only overstepped the mark but revealed too much.

--------------------------------I think I'm falling in love with you My heart is beating faster than I want it to--------------------------------- Lily could not help but to raise an eyebrow at his words. She was pursing her lips together in an act that reminded her of her sister. Her arms seemed to never leave their spot across her chest. The glare that she had reserved just for him was there. She bit down on her tongue to held back her snappy retort. Instead she told him, “You provoked him either way. You always do that.” There was a note of bitterness to her voice. “You were always at him ever since we started in our first year. At least all he needs is a break.” Was it her imagination or did she feel her eyes starting to become watery? She blinked a couple of times as she tried to get herself to calm down. The last thing she wanted to do was to start crying in front of James. She would run to hell and back before she did something like that. She didn’t want to look weak in his eyes. But then again…she might have already. Lily took a deep breath. “I might have hold a grudge about what happened Potter. I…can’t hold it forever.” What was she really saying? That she was tired of hating him and was willing to give him a second chance? That thought went out the window as Lily withheld a snort. She didn’t know what she wanted from this. Hell, she did not know what she wanted from herself right now.
All of this was complicated enough. It was clear that she was confused on how she was feeling about him. “I don’t know what I want,” Lily confessed to him. “It’s bad enough I’m falling for y-” She stopped dead in her tracks. She could feel the heat rising to her cheeks. Was she really about to tell him that she was falling for him!? This was turning into such a lovely conversation. Lily ran a hand through her hair trying to get herself to calm down. She bit down on the inside of her cheeks. At this moment it was hard to tell which was redder. Her cheeks or her hair. A very awkward silence spread between the two as Lily was trying hard to look everywhere but him. The sky, the grass, the trees. This wasn’t how she wanted to do things. This really wasn’t how she thought the conversation would end up at. Oh dear, she thought. I’m only digging myself deeper and deeper into a hole. I can’t take my words back once they come out of my mouth. So I should better start thinking before I say anything. Unfortunaly, what came out of his mouth made the decision for her.
Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly at him. “He was my friend Potter! I have every right to defend him!” The sixteen year old took in a sharp breath. He was calling her naïve? Lily had to pause there, trying to collect herself. All throughout her life she had been naïve. She had believed even the most ridiculous of stories and they had usually come from Petunia. “Don’t think I noticed that myself!?” She was practically shrieking at him. Right now Lily considered it a good thing that they were alone. “Do you think I tried to tell him where his friends were heading!? He was too thick to listen and then that incident happened!” The sixth year took a deep and shaky breath. Try as she might, Lily could not stop her eyes swimming with tears. “That was the main difference between you and him Potter. HE didn’t try to hook up with me every chance he got. HE didn’t try to ask me out every single time. We were friends because we WANTED to be. He’s not spoiled at home! He’s being knocked around by his father and he needed someone-” Oh Merlin what was she doing today? Lily was letting everything slip out. This was definitely not the way she wanted things to go. Her eyes widen at his last words. Did he seriously just say that to her about him?
“And tell me, who does deserve me?” Lily’s voice had gone cold, icy cold. Her eyes were flashing with anger as she balled up her hands into fists. If she wasn’t shaking with anger she might have swung a punch at time. “I’ll tell you who does Potter. Someone who doesn’t give a damn about whose my friend. Someone who’s good and kind and doesn’t push people around for the fun of it. Someone who’s modest.” If that was possible her voice was growing even more colder. She could feel the tears sliding down her cheeks. Oh drat it. “Someone who’s pleasant to be around. Because I have this feeling that I may not live up to old age!” There. It was out. Lily bursts into tears. [/blockquote] Tagged!? James <3333 Words!? 813 Notes!? HA. Lily's crying now. Credit!? The credit is to Lily at .live forever.

James just rolled his eyes at her, in the same irritating way she always did to him. Take that, Evans, see how you like being played at your own game. He didn’t want to stand here and listen to her stick up for Severus bloody Snape. It made his insides burn with anger and his heart ache with pain. He folded his arms across his chest also, mirroring her image. He had to admit, that part of him was trying to be humorous because it was easier than being angry and hurt. James used humour as a defence mechanism and if he ever needed to defend himself from hurt, it was now. No, please don’t cry! James thought wildly as he noticed tears beginning to well at the corners of Lily’s beautiful green eyes. He could not deal with crying girls, he didn’t know how. He struggled even when the girls on the Quidditch team welled up because they’d been hit particularly hard by a bludger during practice sessions. Emotional crying was ten times worse. He could manage looking after his fellow marauder’s tears but girls. No way. He’d royally screw this up if she burst into tears.
He couldn’t hold his pose any longer, his arms dropped to his sides, his shoulder’s sagging and his jaw gaping in disbelief. Was she really saying this? Saying that she would forgive him? Seriously, James understood better than Lily realised, just how good hers and Severus’ friendship was, but only in his nightmares did Lily forgive him for what he had said. Merlin that helpless look was back on her face again. He hated that expression more than the glare. Once again he wished he could change it. He knew that changing it would mean either his dreams coming true or his nightmares. His dream being Lily falling into his arms for comfort and his nightmare being her fixing her friendship with Severus. Damn Snivellus Snape. Even thinking his name set his teeth on edge. The next time James saw him, he was in for it. Big time. James hadn’t had a chance to punish the Slytherin properly for his abhorrence and now he was seeing firsthand the effect it was having on Lily. Well, the guy deserved the worst. James suddenly realised he hadn’t spoken for quite a while and he was about to open his mouth but Lily continued.
If it was even possible, the Gryffindor’s jaw dropped open even further. He hadn’t really been concentrating on her words; his mind had been busy concocting torturous situations for Snape. What had she been about to say? Had his brain made that up in an attempt to make him feel better? Did she even say anything at all? He looked very carefully at her face. She looked flustered and a little embarrassed. But that could be because she was being so emotional in front of him and not because she was just about to admit something huge. . . He was about to ask her to repeat her words but, fortunately for Lily probably, she carried on once more and his anger began to override the shock. ”Was! Was your friend, Evans!” He sighed loudly and exasperatedly. He wasn’t getting through to her, she was so flipping frustrating! Did she really dislike him so much that even when he was blatantly right she would ignore him? Could she not tell that all he wanted was what was best for her? ”Maybe he took you for granted then! And if this is how he makes you feel he’s not a very good friend is he?” He yelled back at her but his face dropped at what she said next. He was knocked around at home? James didn’t quite know what to do with that information. Did it change the way he felt about him? At the minute, when James hadn’t felt more rage at the boy, not really. He still hated his guts. Just because his dad was abusive didn’t mean Snape had to be such a git as well.
”I do! I deserve you. Because I wouldn’t be stupid enough to ever let you go.” James slapped his hand to his chest as he said it, his eyes alight with passion. Shit, she was crying. James looked helplessly around but there was no one near them. The other students obviously deciding to give their quarrel a wide berth. No one wanted to get on the wrong side of Lily Evans. His hand jumped to his hair but not to ruffle it, instead he ran his hand through nervously. He lowered his voice an octave or two. ”I’d look after you. I’d do anything.” His expression was helpless, not only because he couldn’t deal with crying girls but because he was beginning to feel her slipping through her fingers. The ice in her eyes was evident. ”Hey,” He said softly, carefully, gently and cautiously placing a hand lightly on her shoulder. ”Don't cry. I'm sorry. Are you okay? Well obviously not because you're crying.” He stopped rambling then because it wasn't helping one bit and turned to what he did best. Humour. "Don’t make me have to charm those tears away. You’ve seen how rubbish I am at charms, I’d probably end up inflating your head. Still be smaller than mine though, eh?" He said it light-heartedly and attempted a smile.

--------------------------------I think I'm falling in love with you My heart is beating faster than I want it to--------------------------------- The sixth year continued to purse her lips together. Her arms were folded across her chest, staying there. She bit down on the inside of her cheeks as she counted slowly from one to ten. She had been about to snap at him, saying something harsh but she stopped herself just in time. Merlin why was he so frustrating at times!? Once Lily had thought that she knew him he would completely do a three sixty and change. It was a game of cat and mouse. And Lily was the mouse that James was trying to catch. It was annoying at how he was constantly asking her out. It was also annoying at how much she was turning him down. Maybe…just maybe…one day she would say yes, and then turn around and say no a few minutes later. No, a small voice whispered in the back of her head. That would be cruel in itself and you know it. You can’t do that. A small sigh escaped from her lips. “I might give you a chance Potter. Merlin only knows what plans you have up your sleeve the next time you asked me out. Can’t be any worse than the time you asked me out in class, on bended knee. McGonagall looked as if she was going to give you a years’ worth of detention. Remember that one?”
Lily could not get that one out of her mind. No matter how much she had tried to do it. It was something that she can’t get out of her head. Her eyes were growing softer as her irritation at him was slowly melting away. “Look, Potter, I won’t try to deny this strange…fascination that you have with me. I don’t understand it at all. That first impression wasn’t so great but I think I can get past that. No matter what I can do I always think of you as a bullying arrogant show off.” There was a frown on her face now as her eyes sparkled with an odd look. She stared straight in his eyes without even blinking. She was giving him one of her serious looks, one that he should know all too well by now. Lily figured that she could not pretend to hate him anymore. Sighing again she ran a hand through her hair, quiet for a while. The red haired girl was trying to figure out what to do next. Tell him what she feels or not to tell him. That was what she was battling in her mind. I can probably lay it off for a while, Lily thought to herself as she continued to eye him. He would probably gloat while saying that he was right.
She was pulled out of her thoughts by James shouting at her. Her eyes held that blazing look again. “Don’t think I noticed that already Potter? I tried to put him on the right path!” Her shoulders slumped slightly. “He didn’t take me for granted Potter. He….” Lily’s voice trailed off as she started to think. She was starting to realize that, perhaps, his words had been right. “It’s not just that Potter. It’s more of a…childhood friend. The first person that had seen magic in me when I was only eight. I knew strange things were happening but not like that…” Her cheeks turned pink. She was rambling. Lily decided to shut up and looked at James as she let it spill out that Snape’s father had abused him. She wondered what he was thinking. “I know your kind Potter. You’ll be glad to get the girl that you’re fawning over for and within a couple of months dumping her. You would say almost anything wouldn’t you?” His words had shut her up. Well, at least for a few minutes. “Would you?” She found herself asking him. “Would you promise your life on that?” Merlin she looked broken. Lily hated feeling this way. She especially hated feeling this way in front of James.
She slowly raised her head to look at him through tear filled eyes. How did she let things go this far? “How do I know you’re not telling the truth James? How do I know you’re only telling me what I want to hear?” Her voice was extra soft as tears continued to spill down her cheeks. The look on his face made her burst into tears even harder. Oh lord she wanted to tell him. Lily looked at him as she felt his hand touching her shoulder. Perhaps for the first time she relaxed slowly against him. The corners of her lips twitched upwards into a small smile as she let out a small giggle. “Your head will always be big James. No matter what you do to it.” Lily searched his eyes she wiped the tears. Here goes nothing, she thought and took a deep breath. “I…I love you James.” There. She said it. She had actually told him and now she watched him, somewhat tensed. It was silly the way that Lily was feeling, as if she would be rejected but she should know better by now. [/blockquote] Tagged!? The plan was always the same. Persistently bug Lily until she gave in and let him take her on a date and then charm the cotton socks off of her and she’d forget how much she disliked him before and they’d fall in love. Grow old together, get married, have children (a boy and a girl) and do all of it; the white picket fence included. James put on a front around his friends that he wasn’t a hopeless romantic but really he was and that was why he had never managed to keep a girlfriend for longer than a few days because it was always glaringly obvious that there was only one redhead for him. Lily. And so when she said she might give him a chance, his heart soared. It was the moment he’d been waiting for, for five long years. He grinned sheepishly, remembering the incident well. ”McGonagall thought it was romantic really. And don’t deny it and tell me you weren’t just a tiny bit flattered.” He was pleased she remembered it, it made him feel special.
Here we go, back to offending him again, but James took it lightly this time, after what she had said moments ago, he’d be walking on sunshine for the next week. Even getting put in detention or a bad Quidditch practise wouldn’t darken his spirits this week after hearing that Lily might give him a chance. ”I’ve heard it all before, Evans.” He said brightly, waving away her comment about him being an arrogant, bullying toe rag once more. But then the conversation steered itself back to Snivellus and he didn’t want to hear it, didn’t want to hear how he’d been the one to introduce her to the magical world and so he closed his eyes, mirroring what she’d done before in counting slowly to ten in his head. Do not snap and break Snivelly’s neck. Do not snap and break Snivelly’s neck. Was the mantra he repeated until her words about him were over.
”Do you think I’d be saying this otherwise?” He asked her, the anger still evident in his voice because he couldn’t believe that she believed he would leave her. ”Do you think I would go to so much trouble if I was going to abandon you after a few months?” James was getting angry because otherwise he’d end up crying like Lily and that would most certainly not do himself any favours, at least with the Slytherins. ”Have you not noticed Lily,” He didn’t realise he’d used her first name, ”That there are no other girls? When have you ever seen me so much as hold hands with another girl? If I was “that sort of guy” wouldn’t I have given up on you already? There's no one else I want, only you.” He paused, breathing heavily still, his shoulders heaving. ”Yes!” He said emphatically, agreeing to promise his life on his words. His expression softened though when his comment made her giggle – that was the sound he wanted to hear more than anything in the world. "My big head suits me though, no?" He carefully wiped away a stray tear that Lily had missed, revelling in the contact - her skin was so soft!
Then she said those three little words that James didn’t think he’d ever hear coming out of Lily Evan’s mouth, I love you. ”W-w-What?” He stammered certain he’d misheard her. Lily didn’t love him, she detested him, looked down on him, didn’t want anything to do with him and the last time James checked that didn’t translate to love. ”No you don’t?” His brow furrowed, his mind racing, trying to make sense of it all. He took a step backwards, sure that this was some sort of cruel trick she was playing on him. Snivelly would probably jump from a nearby bush and yell ‘Fooled ya!’ He looked wildly around as if searching for the maker of this prank – James did not like being the victim. But this was not funny at all anyway; this was toying with his emotions; that wasn’t fair. He took another step back, wondering whether to make a run for it. He was completely confused now because no one had revealed themselves, no one was yelling that this was a joke and Lily was looking at him with tear-stained eyes and with a sincere expression. He looked at her weakly, feeling like his knees might collapse at any second. ”You’re not joking are you? I don't get it. . . you hate me?”

--------------------------------I think I'm falling in love with you My heart is beating faster than I want it to--------------------------------- The sixth year turned a bit pink at his words and quickly bit down on her lower lip. “Maybe a little flattered Potter but that was a bit out of the way even for you,” There was no harshness to her words. Her tone was civil enough. There was also no hatred to speak whatsoever. “Not to mention the countless poems and dramatic effects..” Her voice trailed off as there was a thoughtful look on her face. “You don’t know how many of those I actually do remember James.” Probably one of the few times during the whole conversation that she had called him by her first name instead of his last name. That was the norm for the two Gryffindors. It was also normal for them to be seen in an argument. Or rather for Lily to be yelling, or screaming, her head off at James because he did something stupid. “I’ll give you once chance James. If you by somehow manage to screw it up you can forget about being with me.” She gave him one of her serious looks, one that he should know all too well. She wasn’t playing around with this kind of stuff. “I don’t want my heart to be played around with. None of that James.” One of the few times that Lily was showing that she was being vulnerable around him. It was kind of nice for a change. She might even start to be herself around the slightly annoying black haired boy.
She gave him a rather startled look before shaking her head. Certainly his head was up in the clouds now after she told him that she would give him a chance. Perhaps Lily was finally starting to see the good in him, or at least she hoped she was. Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly in a dark glare at him. She knew the subject on Severus had brought out the hate in him. “Try as you might James, Severus is….I mean was my best friend. Don’t you have a best friend you would like to talk about?” The withering look was back in her gaze as she eyed him closely. “Like…maybe the id-Black,” Lily was about to call Sirius the idiot. It was something that she had privately nicknamed him. In her argument, Sirius had acted the idiot ever since the first meeting on the train. It was here that she had paused as she was thinking something through. If she was willing to give James one chance she might as well give Sirius a chance. The thought alone made the corners of her lips twitched upwards into a small smile. She was pulled out of her thoughts as James was speaking. She eyed him carefully before sighing. “You’ll never know, not with some guys who think they can charm the hell out of you. Then afterwards not speaking to you again when they get what they want.”
Maybe she was taking all of this into stride. Maybe she was being judgmental before everything happened. His words were making sense oddly enough. He had never given up on her when she had rejected him outright. He had never given up on her when she had called him an arrogant bully. “Does this mean I can trust you?” Lily’s voice had never sounded smaller. “Can I trust you enough not to back down when I need you the most? Be there for me?” She was pretty sure that she had asked these questions a few minutes ago but she didn’t care. All she needed was for James to say the right answer. And the right answer only. He did have a point, she thought to herself. She never saw James with another girl holding hands. Maybe he truly wasn’t the player that she thought he was. The corners of her lips twitched upwards into a small smile. “Your big head always suits you James. It helps keep that small bit of a brain intact,” there was nothing but teasing and gentleness to her voice. She didn’t flinch when he wiped away a tear. She relaxed, slowly but surely. “Maybe you’re not as bad I thought you were James.”
Lily steeled herself as she looked straight into his eyes. “I…I love you,” She repeated. She didn’t break into giggles nor had a smile on her eyes. She did not tell him that she was joking. “I…always hated you James. This past summer…things started to change for me. I started looking at things differently. Try as I might, I was developing feelings for you. Shocking I know. Everything is true.” Lily continued to stare at him, trying to convince him that she was not playing at all. “Only don’t tell no one this. The whole school would have a field day. I love you.” Those three words, three simple words, were starting to become easier to say every time. At first she feared that she was losing her mind. Now she knew that she wasn’t. She remembered!? She stored it all in her brain!? Wow that made James feel good. He didn’t care when he was doing it if she forgot the next day because he’d move heaven and earth to show her how much he cared but to know that she did actually care made his stomach flip and his hand jump to his hair. Not in the usual cocky, ‘look at me’ way, but in an almost nervous gesture because he was flattered. It suddenly occurred to him how although he’d continually bug her, he must’ve actually thought his chances were pretty slim because he was seriously shocked by this revelation. ”I promise.” He said sincerely, holding her green eyed gaze as he spoke. He actually had her, well had a chance, he wasn’t going to waste it that was for sure.
He frowned at her now though. Reluctant to agree that yes, Severus (he forced himself to use his proper name) was her best friend and yes, she would want to talk about him. James wasn’t sure how much of that he could stand. He’d just try his best to avoid it at all costs because he wasn’t sure he would be able to hold his tongue. He’d spent years doing what he wanted, never having to take into account anyone else’s needs or feelings. Is this what being in a relationship was like, compromise? For someone who was used to getting what they wanted, that was odd. He thought he would do anything for Lily. He wasn’t sure if accepting Severus was something he could. So avoiding the topic seemed like a good idea to him. That way it seemed as if he was accepting him but inside his thoughts were still bordering on murderous. ”Yes.” He answered grudgingly. ”Though I’m not sure you’d want to listen to me ramble on about Sirius and quite honestly I don’t think half of the stuff he gets up to is suitable for your ears.” His lips twitched as some of Sirius’ shenanigans entered his mind. Don’t argue with her James, you’re just about getting her on your side! Was he really this much of a monumental fudge-up with girls? He hoped she’d take his comment in a good light. Or perhaps they were just destined to argue with each other?
These sorts of declarations were usually beneath him. On the outside he liked to act like Sirius, care-free seeing girls as good for only one thing and objectifying them. But he was a romantic at heart and he suddenly realised that this, if anything was going to let him down, was where it would probably go wrong. He’d avoided his romantic side in order to keep up his reputation with his friends but if he was to have Lily by his side, he’d have to show her how much she meant. And he wanted to, he really did, but it would be at the expense of himself. Could he do that? Right now he could because no one was around to make fun of him for it. ”Lily,” he started, and couldn’t help but let his lips twitch, Merlin he loved saying her name and he loved hearing her say his. ”Whatever you need, I’ll be there. Even if it’s the dead of night, I don’t care you can come and find me. However big or small, I’ll be there to hold your hand, to make you smile, to show you how much I care. You can count on me.” He finished firmly.
Okay, apparently she was serious. Really, truly, generally serious. Lily Evans loved him. That sounded amazing. He played it over and over again in his mind, his joy growing each and every time. Lily Evans loves me, she loves me. Me! Loves me. Lily loves me. As soon as he realised that she was being genuine, the hugest grin broke out onto his face. It wasn’t the usual type of smile that tended to grace his lips around Lily - that was more of a smirk. No, this was an ecstatic I could jump and touch the stars right now smile. He felt like doing just that. His legs, which had been sore and achy after a long, hard Quidditch session were now fuelled with energy that made him want to run, keep running and jump and shout and punch the air with his fists. But he couldn’t do that without looking like one hell of an idiot and so he was keeping it all caged inside. Which was difficult. But smiling helped.
He couldn’t help but think though that he was getting a little ahead of himself. In the middle of an argument with her was not the way he imagined the two of them would exchange those words for the first time. He’d pictured a romantic date; a picnic by the lake or a candlelit dinner to be the setting for the first ‘I love you’s’. But then, this was James Potter and Lily Evans, bickering extraordinaires. Of course it’d happen during an argument. He had a funny urge to roll his eyes. I should have known. He suddenly realised he hadn’t said it back. He felt reluctant to even though it was true. Not only because of the situation but because he still had a sneaking suspicion of doubt. ”I love you too.” He said genuinely, his smile still broad but he needed a little bit more of an explanation to soothe his anxiety. ”And it’s not shocking.” He held his arms out, looking himself up and down. ”I’m a catch.” That’s right James, use humour to procrastinate the one thing you want to ask her. ”So, you’ll go out with me on a date then?” He was nervous, actually well and truly bricking it! More nervous than when he’d ever asked her before even though it was most likely that she would say yes. Maybe that was why he was nervous, he would actually have to take her on a date . . . what if he screwed it up?
TAG !? lily WORDS !? 1014 NOTES !? Please excuse my lame attempt at a declaration of love. I am one of the most unromantic people and so it’s hard to tap into my romantic side and play a soppy James because I don’t have much of one! so maybe pretend his speech was a lot more convincing than it actually was! xD

--------------------------------I think I'm falling in love with you My heart is beating faster than I want it to--------------------------------- The sixteen year old breathed out a quiet and shaky sigh. She was not used to feeling vulnerable around James. Any other time she would be the complete opposite. Acting as if he did not exist and ignored him. Any other time she would have forced herself to make a civil conversation with him. In which he usually ends up screwing something over. She would simply have to trust his word on this one. Lily carefully looked at him as she grumbled a little under her breath. Next time don’t break down into tears in front of him, she told herself silently. He might end up bragging to the idiot boys in the common room when they were alone. The red haired slowly looked up at him as he held her gaze with his own. She started to relax little by little. “I’m holding you up to that promise James.” And again, probably one of the few times that, during this conversation, she had said his name. It would definitely take some time getting used to but she figured she would slip up every now and then. And besides, that was their second natures to anyways. For the second time in this encounter, Lily pulled out her wand and pointed it at him, pretending to sound threatening. “Break anything, break one simple agreement and it’s off. I don’t care if it’s a major one or a minor one. I will do it to.”
Lily did sound convincing when she wanted to. Her emerald green eyes were flashing with slight anger again as she put her wand back into her pocket. She quirked an eyebrow as he answered her question. She pretended not to sound interested but she couldn’t help herself. “Oh? I can pretty much guess what he’s been up to.” The corners of his lips twitched as she gently smacks him up the head. “We’re sixteen James. I’m pretty much mature enough but I could say the less for you.” There was a gentle teasing tone to her voice as she pushed back a couple of strands of her hair away from her eyes. Lily tried to relax but she could not. She had always kept her guard up while around James. There was no knowing what the idiot boy would do once she turned her back away from him. It was as if fate was controlling their lives for them the moment they had set their eyes on one another at the first train ride. Funnily enough, Lily could still hear his voice. “Slytherin? Who wants to be in Slytherin?” She was only eleven years old of course. She had no chance of knowing that Slytherin house turned out more dark wizards and witches than any other houses at Hogwarts. She basically had to learn everything through trial and error. Trial and error, she thought to herself with a soft sigh. It seemed as if everything was trial and error these days. Where would the madness stop?
She couldn’t help but to smile softly. “You know it’s funny James. I had figured that, since I was turning you down you would find someone else and that I would finally be left alone. Then I get myself so…jealous at that thought.” She felt her cheeks turning crimson at her words. What was this? Confess to James day or something? She didn’t like it but she did at the same time. Oh how complicated her feelings were. Everything was all tumbling and rushing. “I would take your word on that James. Now I wouldn’t doubt it for even a minute,” Lily was suddenly feeling nervous for whatever reason. The whole school, Merlin the whole wizarding world, would be completely shocked out of their minds once they heard that Lily Evans would be giving James Potter a chance. She was quite sure that they would be the talk of the school for years to come really. As long as this doesn’t get out before the first date, she thought and blinked, surprised at herself. A slow smile was spreading across her lips as she realized that she was looking forward to the date. “No one will never know of this until the time is right James.” Her expression, and suddenly her voice, was becoming stern again. “And not a moment too soon.”
Of course Lily didn’t have to tell him her thoughts. It was common knowledge that Lily Evans hated, no loathed, James Potter. The two of them would often be seeing arguing at the top of their lunges. That was when he would have done something stupid that would cause her to yell. The corners of her lips twitched upwards as she watched him spread his arms. “Not that bit of a catch I’m sure,” She teased him. Sometimes he had reminded her of the boys back home and in her neighborhood. The ‘look at me I’m popular’ type. The smile on her lips actually broaden as he asked her that one question he always asked. This time, however, it would be with a completely different outcome. “Yes, I would want to go out on a date.” She suddenly laughed. Her eyes started to twinkle as she thought to herself, this probably won’t be too bad at all. “I would rather much prefer that then saying a blasted poem in class that ended up with me storming out.” She remembered. She remembered every single one of his ways to try to catch her off guard. Lily wouldn’t admit it but some of them did made her jump at time. There was the little incident involving an owl flying in her room later that evening with a letter. The letter was full of hopeless romantic words that she threw in the fireplace that following evening. Memories, she thought with a sigh. [/blockquote] Tagged!? Jamesss Words!? 970 Notes!? He nodded; his face sincere. Merlin did he know he wasn’t allowed to screw this up. He had once chance and that was all he was getting; one look at the look on Lily’s face told him that for sure. His lips twitched again as she said his name, the thrill jolting through him once more heating up his insides. Would that always be his reaction? He hoped so; he didn’t think the feeling would ever get old. He nodded again, his eyes wide and honest, ”I believe you.” What he didn’t believe and what he wasn’t so sure of was that he didn’t have the ability to screw this up. Worry about that Later, James. He told himself firmly. After all, this didn’t happen every day, this was a moment to be savoured to the fullest.
James imitated her actions, replacing his own wand back inside his quidditch robes, looking up at her again to find her hand making contact with his head. He frowned at her, his hand jumping to his hair, ruffling it up and soothing the part she had hit all at the same time. ”What was that for?” He objected, ”I hope you’re not going to make a habit of that.” He grumbled, lowering his arm and pouting at her. ”Yes well, we don’t all possess the levels of sensible maturity as Lily Evans. Some of us like to have fun.” He teased lightly, unable to stay cross at her for very long. And besides, he quite liked her touching him, even if it was in a slightly aggressive way. It was a huge step forward nonetheless. Was she maybe, finally beginning to at least drop her shields a tiny bit? James really hoped so.
Jealous? Of him being with someone else? All of this time? Despite Lily’s obvious discomfort over revealing this to him, his heart soared ever higher. ”There was only ever you, Lily. There only ever will be you.” He said softly, feeling heat rush to his cheeks as he said it. He knew he hadn’t been delusional all of this time, he knew there was something somewhere in her heart that actually liked him. He was crazy about her and yes, that eclipsed any sort of rational thinking but over the years there had always been moments of promise between them, nothing as ridiculous as this, but just slight flashes of hope that had given James something to cling to. And now he knew he hadn’t imagined any of that. ”I knew you had it bad for me, Evans.” He teased lightly. But his words and expression turned serious once more at her next words. He was beginning to realise how guarded Lily really was, she genuinely felt that there was a huge possibility that James would break her heart and was obviously worried about the school knowing. Personally, James would quite happily shout it from the rooftops and tell her that he was going to guard her heart with his life. Instead he nodded once more. ”I understand, that’s fine. We’ll keep things on the down low for now.” He frowned, thinking of the likes of Rita Skeeter, ”If anything is able to be kept quiet within this school.”
”Brilliant.” If it was possible, James’ grin exploded as Lily agreed to go on a date with him. The moment had finally arrived. It was strange, but James felt all of the pieces of his life fall into place and everything felt right all of a sudden. The fact that he was tired and muddy from Quidditch didn’t matter. The birds were singing louder, the sun was shining brighter; all was good in the world. ”Okay, I’ll organize something for us and let you know?” Ideas for picnics by the lake and trips to Hogsmeade flashed through his mind at one hundred miles per hour. Later, he’d decide later when he’d had time to process everything and let it all sink in because in all honesty, James was still waiting for someone to jump out at him and shout that it was all a joke. He took a hold of his broomstick. ”I’ll try not to whack you with it this time.” He grinned, slowly lifting it over his shoulder; careful to make a meal of it. ”I should probably go and take a shower.” He wrinkled his nose, looking down at his robes. He gave her a small, nervous smile. ”I’ll be in touch.”
